We've begun development work on a new green hydrogen project in partnership with EET Hydrogen. Gowy Green Hydrogen – which would be a 40MWe facility located in the North West of England – could help the UK meet its target of delivering 10GW of low-carbon hydrogen by 2030. In doing so, the project could help to deliver a clean power system and enable hard-to-abate industries in the region to decarbonise. Hannah Bronwin, our Director of Business Development, said: “We’re excited to work with EET Hydrogen to develop Gowy Green Hydrogen, which can help secure much needed hydrogen production capacity in a region which is already playing a leading role in the energy transition.”

Our new energy-from-waste facility in Slough has officially entered commercial operations ahead of schedule. The 55MW Slough Multifuel plant – which was developed in partnership with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and delivered by EPC contractor Hitachi Zosen Inova – will divert thousands of tonnes of waste away from landfill and convert it into a valuable source of energy. Our Managing Director, Finlay McCutcheon, said: “The successful delivery of the project is testament to the partnership between SSE and CIP, which spans multiple projects and continues to create genuine value. "It also highlights our ability to deliver large capital projects, with this particular project being a highly complex one due to the constrained nature of the site. Working with HZI, we have navigated that challenge and can take real pride in doing so safely.”

Over 60 colleagues from Thermal Engineering and Asset Management have signed up to take part in the Big Walk in September this year, hoping to raise thousands of pounds for the end-of-life charity, Marie Curie. Those lacing up their boots aim to cover a distance of 50km along the Cumbrian Way. Marie Curie was announced as our charity partner in April 2023, supporting the charity’s mission to ensure that everyone, no matter who they are or where they live, has the support they need around them, whatever terminal illness they're facing. Marie Curie is the UK's leading end of life charity. The charity provides essential nursing and hospice care for people with any terminal illness, a free support line and a wealth of information and support on all aspects of dying, death and bereavement. It is the largest charity funder of palliative and end of life care research in the UK. Marie Curie is committed to sharing its expertise to improve quality of care and ensuring that everyone has a good end of life experience. The money raised by the Big Walk will help fund vital nursing care for someone with a terminal illness. Marc Rudd, Director of Thermal Engineering and Asset Management, said, “This is our sixth annual Big Walk, our first in aid of Marie Curie, and year-on-year more colleagues have stepped up. Together, through these walks, we have raised over £60,000 for deserving charities. Having taken on the challenge myself many times, the walks didn’t just help raise funds for a cause close to all our hearts, but they are a brilliant opportunity to connect with colleagues outside of the office and give our mental and physical wellbeing the attention it deserves too. “In 2012 we had 10 walkers, so to have over 60 people signed up for the 2024 walk already is brilliant, and I’m looking forward to getting the walking boots back on and to raise much needed funds to support families up and down the UK affected by dying, death and bereavement.’’ If you would like to donate towards our fundraising effort, it would be greatly appreciated. Thermal Engineering and Asset Management will be presenting at Axiom’s Hydrogen Technical Forum on Wednesday 4 September.   Engineering Manager Simon Garlick and Hydrogen Technology Engineer Ashik Mohamed will provide insights into the challenges and opportunities that the path to decarbonisation will bring – the role of hydrogen in decarbonising the power sector and the challenges of using hydrogen in power generation and fuel switching.   The energy transition to hydrogen remains a significant challenge. In seeking to deliver net-zero emissions by 2050, industry has a critical part to play in investing in the transition to alternative energy technologies. With hydrogen viewed as an attractive option with the capacity to generate power without the emission of harmful greenhouse gases, meeting ambitious net-zero targets remain a significant challenge. The technical forum aims to deliver insights from key industry leaders and promote discussions around the challenges and opportunities that the path towards decarbonisation will bring. With collaboration and the sharing of knowledge, we can collectively facilitate the change needed to support the global movement towards achieving Net Zero.   Simon and Ashik will be joined by Steve Woodward, Principal Materials Engineer at AXIOM, who will talk about Degradation Mechanism in Hydrogen. Tom Oates, Engineering Manager at Kellas, and Laura Jack, H2 North-East Project Process Engineer at Kellas, will discuss Hydrogen Plant Safety, Design Safety and Asset Integrity Challenges. Mark McKenna, Process Technology Manager at Johnson Matthey, will talk about the impact of process efficiency in delivering best in class low carbon hydrogen. #hydrogen #leaders #ssethermal #hydrogenengineering #axiom #NetZero

📢 Yesterday, CEO Ruth Herbert MPhys FEI attended a reception hosted by SSE Thermal, where Ian Murray MP, Secretary of State for Scotland, spoke about the importance of the The Acorn Project. Ruth had a productive conversation with Ian, emphasising the significant opportunities CCUS provides for Scottish industry and clean power in Scotland. The Scottish Cluster, which includes The Acorn Project and other key initiatives, aims to: 🛠 Abate up to 10 million tonnes of CO₂ per year by 2030, contributing up to one-third of the UK’s total CO₂ reduction target. 👥 Create 10,800 development and construction jobs across the UK, with 4,700 in Scotland, plus 4,700 operational jobs (2,300 in Scotland). It will also safeguard 18,800 jobs across the UK, including 12,100 in Scotland. 💷 Contribute £17.7 billion to UK economic output up to 2050. Thermal's Head of Asset Management, Kubeshnee Chetty, recently joined other industry ambassadors at a Women in Engineering Society event at Caterpillar.   The event brought together ambassadors from across multiple diverse sectors including the NHS, Caterpillar, National Rail and Universities to champion the contribution of women in engineering.   Women engineers are still hugely under-represented, with 2021 figures indicating that in the UK only 16.5% of engineers are women. Statistics show;   Only 2% of all professional engineers are women of colour. Women hold 9% of the top career grade positions in engineering. There has been an increase in female managers in science and engineering in the last five years. A study on women in the workplace statistics estimates a significant growth in women’s involvement in STEM occupations by 2030. Researchers are confident that women will account for 29% of STEM jobs in the UK at the turn of the decade.   Universities in the UK still receive four times more engineering applications from men than women. However, despite this uneven proportion, there’s still cause for celebration. At the turn of the decade, applications from women for engineering courses increased by 93.5%, nearly doubling the number ten years ago.   The gender gap in STEM remains a widespread problem in the UK. Although there has been an increase in women graduating from STEM courses, the percentage only fluctuates between 25% and 26%. This is because there’s also a rapid increase in the number of men graduating from STEM courses.   Kubeshnee said,   ‘‘The Women in Engineering Society is the only platform of its kind, playing a vital role in encouraging more young women and girls to take up engineering careers.   ‘‘Within Thermal, we have some remarkable women engineers and are always keen to recruit more with Women in STEM projects and events taking place throughout the UK.  We are very much a progressive company with active inclusive recruitment, progression and retention policies.   ‘‘It was a pleasure to have been asked by the Women in Engineering Society to attend the event at Caterpillar and a fantastic opportunity to not only see their operations but also to bring together engineers, students, and supporters to recognise the vital role women play in engineering.’’   To find out more about the Women’s Engineering Society please visit Home – Women's Engineering Society (wes.org.uk)
