The bank built for you.

About us

Hello, we’re Starling. Banking was broken – so we decided to fix it. The vision? Fast technology, fair service and honest values. All at the tap of a phone, all the time. We built Britain’s first digital bank. One hard-won banking licence later, we set about giving people a new way to spend, save and manage their money (and take better care of the planet, too). We’re changing banking for good. Back then, we were obsessed with unravelling the knotty world of finance and solving people’s problems rather than selling them stuff. We still are. Since then, we’ve grown. A lot. Over four million accounts (and four account types!). A team of thousands. Headquartered in London with offices in Cardiff, Dublin, Manchester and Southampton. Five years voted Which? Recommended Provider and Britain's Best Banking Brand. Still zero branches. Our culture is open, inclusive and focused on solving real customer problems, with an emphasis on doing the right thing, even when it’s not always the easy thing. From our approach to working together and sustainability to how we build our products, our decisions need to make the world – and Starling – a better place to be. Everyone at Starling is essential to our mission, which is really quite simple: to solve our customer’s problems – and build the best bank in the world! And now we're providing Starling to other banks, via a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) proposition through our subsidiary Engine, using the proprietary technology platform that it uses to power our own bank.

In case you missed it: we’ve launched a new editorial platform, Noteworthy. We sat down with our Creative Content Strategist and project lead, Annabel Herrick, to learn more. What is Noteworthy? A new home for our editorial, hosting all kinds of content (long-form articles, illustrations, videos) to breathe life into money storytelling. Money is one of the few universal experiences, it affects everyone, so let's talk about it! Money underpins every big decision so it's emotional – and monumental. It’s about tackling difficult conversations; relationships, milestones. Aligning with our new brand platform, The Bank Built For You, the Noteworthy content strategy focuses on human storytelling; real stories, real people. Why ‘Noteworthy’ for the name? Noteworthy has a double meaning: noteworthy content, and exploring what's worthy of your 'bank notes'. You'll spot these handwritten flourishes, such as dashes and arrows, whenever you see Noteworthy – from our social media to the new newsletter. Which agency is helping with the project? No agency! Noteworthy was built (and will be managed) in-house by Starling Bank’s creative team, including editors, writers, photographers and graphic designers. However, Noteworthy showcases a range of voices, so we feature content from freelance contributors, including award-winning writers and illustrators. What sort of content can we expect? The content strategy includes a new ‘Money Truths’ pillar, which shines a light on relatable moments, milestones and conversations related to money – honest accounts and real lives. Alongside this, you'll find 'Money Masters', which educates our audience on all things money, featuring expert voices, including pros here at Starling! In our new series 'Joined at the Chip', real couples test drive our joint account for a month and write about how it changes their relationship. In 'How Much Does it Cost' we explore the real cost of something, whether that’s a condition, decision or circumstance – such as getting a dog, being pregnant or moving to a remote island. Finally, our already popular 'For What It's Worth' series features anonymous case studies covering tricky but important topics, such as break-ups, bereavement and childcare.

Earlier this month, we celebrated South Asian Heritage Month with an event at our London office hosted by EmbRace, our Race and Ethnicity Network. The team explored this year's theme, "Free to Be Me”, through poetry, considered a liberating form of self expression. The event brought together colleagues from across the bank to discuss the book I Belong to Nowhere, by Kalyani Thakur Charal. As a poetry fan, our new Group CEO, Raman Bhatia, opened the discussion. He shared some thoughts on the Ghazal poetry form, his adoration of Fernando Pessoa and his attempt to curate world poetry for his children (Raman hopes through osmosis they will one day share this interest!). Assad Khan then hosted a panel discussion on the book, joined by Wajid N. and Ayesha Gorvi. The group also shared some of their experiences and challenges of growing up with South Asian heritage in the UK, and what poetry has given them as a form of support and expression. Assad said: “Being of South Asian heritage in the modern UK can often make you feel rather unwelcome, that one doesn’t feel like they can entirely fit in here. Poetry can give you means of self-expression and of articulating your own thoughts, feelings, and frustrations. As a medium, it has so much in common with the expressive nature of the South Asian character and culture. It can give words and meaning to often confusing and frustrating thoughts, and help to make sense of one's own experiences and a feeling that you are not going through it alone, which can be comforting and reassuring.” It was inspirational to see and hear colleagues being free to talk about these things, so they may then be inspired to live by the mantra ‘free to be me’, and fantastic to see so many colleagues attend and hear more about South Asian heritage.
