We were thrilled to exhibit at the 2024 AIAG Supply Chain Conference in Detroit last week.  Industry experts, leading automotive manufacturers and sustainability champions gathered to tackle the critical topic of electric vehicle (EV) logistics and safety. The SUPPLIERASSURANCE team, represented by Claire Russell, Charles Morrison, Amy Grimsley, and Patrycja D., was on hand to engage with attendees about our solutions for the rapidly evolving EV landscape. Highlighting our ongoing collaboration with AIAG - Automotive Industry Action Group on forced labour & human rights, led by Tanya Bolden, and its relation to responsible battery production and ethical material sourcing. We also brought a little bit of “Britishness” to the event with our authentic selection of biscuits, chocolate and tea. Here are our top three key takeaways: EV battery supply chain: Balancing sustainability and growth. The transition to EVs promises cleaner air, but concerns linger regarding battery production's environmental impact. Thaddeus Puccini, from Labelmaster discussed the potential sustainability impact associated with extracting critical raw materials. Global regulations are emerging to address the entire battery lifecycle, from mining and responsible warehousing to safe shipping and responsible recycling. Therefore, having supply chain visibility to tier n will be crucial to navigating this complex landscape and creating a sustainable EV future. The customer requirements for EV adoption. Despite their recent growth in adoption, EVs aren't exactly new arrivals on the scene. Andreas Bareid, MBA, from NAATBatt shared that in fact, they boasted 38% market share at the turn of the 20th century. However, limitations in charging speed, range and 20 mph top acceleration ultimately led to their decline. Fast-forward to today, similar concerns linger among potential EV buyers. Thankfully, the EVs are very different as is the infrastructure that supports them. EV fire safety: A different threat. Donald L. Thomas, from CITY OF DETROIT FIRE DEPARTMENT, explored the dangers of fires in electric vehicles. While research suggests a lower fire risk for EVs compared to traditional gasoline vehicles, automotive manufacturers must remain vigilant. EV fires involve unique chemical reactions compared to gas fires, demanding specialised fire safety techniques. The Detroit Fire Department's insights, highlighted the need for the automotive sector to ensure its upstream suppliers have robust health & safety management systems in place.
