We bring organisations together to deliver excellent support for everyone affected by suicide, hosted by Samaritans
About us
Our vision that everyone bereaved or affected by suicide is offered timely and appropriate support. As recognised experts on suicide postvention, we support a wide range of organisations to adopt best practice in suicide bereavement service provision. We are hosted by Samaritans and currently count over 140 members in our network. SASP grows around the issues. We continue to build and diversify our membership, adapt to emerging challenges, and lead conversations across the sector about suicide bereavement.

We had a great time speaking at MHFA England®'s panel this morning on suicide prevention in the workplace. Suicide is preventable through education and intervention, but suicide is still widely stigmatised. Many workplaces don’t know where to begin to change this. The event was a great opportunity to discuss how organisations can embed suicide awareness, prevention and support into workplace mental health and wellbeing strategies. More on MHFA England's work this #WSPD, including their new guide - 'Five pillars of suicide prevention in the workplace': https://buff.ly/4cTZ0pE And find two guides on workplace prevention and postvention we contributed to in 2017 here: - Reducing the risk of suicide: a toolkit for employers: https://buff.ly/4cXRHx0 - Crisis management in the event of a suicide: a postvention toolkit for employers: https://buff.ly/4cQypKd

This #WSPD we’re challenging the stigma surrounding suicide with our sister organisation, the National Suicide Prevention Alliance (NSPA). You don’t need to find the perfect words, talking about suicide can help break the stigma. Visit their online hub to find resources to help #StartTheConversation: bit.ly/STCLM You can also check out our guide, 'Finding the Words', on supporting someone who has been affected by suicide: https://lnkd.in/eRTy357c #LanguageMatters

Tomorrow is World Suicide Prevention Day. We’ll be joining the National Suicide Prevention Alliance in reminding people that talking about suicide doesn’t increase the risk. You don’t need to find the perfect words. By talking about suicide, you can help break the stigma. https://lnkd.in/eKegrtD8 #LanguageMatters #StartTheConversation

A very warm welcome to SASP, to Sandy Bear Children's Bereavement Charity. They support children, young people (0-25yrs) and their parents/support network across Wales, in the lead up to or following the bereavement of someone close to them. Working through 1:1 and peer support sessions, they use a range of resources to help young people understand the process of grief and to develop self-resilience. sandybear.co.uk

It's vital that everyone who is bereaved or affected by suicide is offered timely and appropriate support. If you work with people who have been bereaved by suicide, you're not alone. By becoming a SASP member, we can connect you to a supportive network of other professionals in similar roles to share advice and best practice, and make your voice heard. Today’s ONS data shows that suicide rates registered in England and Wales last year were the highest in more than two decades. These figures show that suicide rates are at a 20-year high and even worse than expected. This needs to be a wake-up call for the Government. Based on these figures, in the 55 days since the new government took power, over 900 people will have died by suicide. Suicide is preventable but not without real action. The Autumn Budget is a chance for this Government to commit to proper investment for suicide prevention.
