EASA.CAT.GEN.MPA. 175 (b) is a regulation set by EASA that has been in effect since 14th February 2021. The regulation calls for airlines to ensure all Pilots receive a psychometric evaluation within 24 months of employment and in advance of commencing line flying. This evaluation must be overseen by a psychologist with at least 3 year’s aviation experience and with expertise in psychological assessment. Symbiotics can support commercial air operators by applying considerable experience and expertise in the assessment of pilots, to assist with meeting the regulation. Pilot Aptitude Tests are a form of psychometric tests that are used by airlines and aviation training organisations to gain insight into a cadet or pilot’s suitability for a specific role or training program. Looking at pilot aptitude assessments in more detail, these are used to assess the core pilot competencies set out by the International Civil Aviation Organization along with any other key areas defined by the aviation organisation (whether that be an airline, flight training school or other), with a view to gaining an understanding of a candidate’s skills, knowledge, behaviour, and motivation. So, what exactly is being tested? The core pilot competencies are:  • Leadership and teamwork  • Communication  • Situational Awareness  • Workload management  • Problem solving and Decision Making  • Application of Knowledge  • Aeroplane Flight Path Management  • Application of Procedures How to measure these competencies through pilot aptitude testing has been defined in a document by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) covering Guidance Material and Best Practices in Pilot Aptitude Testing.
