As students across the country prepare to return to school after the summer holidays, it is important for educators and parents alike to be alert to signs of neglect that may have occurred during the break. Neglect can manifest in various ways: ⭐️ Physical Signs Of Neglect One sign of neglect to be on the lookout for is physical indicators such as poor hygiene and a dishevelled appearance. Neglected students may arrive at school with dirty clothes, unwashed hair, and an overall untidy look. They may also exhibit signs of malnourishment, such as being underweight or constantly complaining of hunger. ⭐️ Behavioural Signs Of Neglect Students who are neglected may display changes in behaviour, such as withdrawal, aggression, or extreme shyness. They may struggle to focus in class, finish assignments, or establish relationships with their peers. These behavioural changes can be a plea for help and must not be overlooked. ⭐️ Emotional Signs Of Neglect Children who are emotionally neglected may lack a sense of security and stability in their lives, leading to feelings of abandonment, low self-esteem, and challenges in forming relationships. They may also find it difficult to control their emotions and might be more prone to outbursts or meltdowns. It is crucial to be attentive to these emotional signs of neglect and offer the necessary support and resources to help these students deal with their experiences. ⭐️ Other Signs of Neglect To Look Out For Chronic absenteeism or lateness is another crucial sign of neglect to keep an eye on. Neglected students may have irregular attendance at school, often arriving late or not attending at all. This could indicate a lack of the required support and motivation to attend school consistently, hinting at a broader issue of neglect in their lives. Teachers can encourage young people to make new friends when they start school in September by fostering a supportive and inclusive classroom environment. Which of these activities will you try? 1. Icebreaker activities: Organise fun and engaging icebreaker activities to help students get to know each other. These could include games, group discussions, or collaborative projects that promote interaction and communication. 2. Group work: Encourage collaboration through group work activities in the classroom. This can help students work together, share ideas, and develop friendships based on common interests or goals. 3. Buddy systems: Pair new students with an existing student buddy who can help them navigate the school, introduce them to other classmates, and provide support in the initial days. 4. Class meetings: Hold regular class meetings where students can share news, updates, or any concerns they might have. This can create a sense of community and belonging among students. 5. Inclusive language: Use inclusive language and encourage students to be kind, respectful, and welcoming to everyone in the classroom. Emphasise the importance of empathy and understanding towards others. 6. Organise extracurricular activities: Encourage students to participate in extracurricular activities, clubs, or sports teams where they can meet new people and form friendships outside of the classroom. 7. Celebrate diversity: Teach students to appreciate and celebrate diversity by sharing stories, traditions, and experiences from different cultures and backgrounds.
