Network Rail's efforts to upgrade Oxford Station and improve local transport networks are facing delays. The replacement of the railway bridge on Botley Road, originally scheduled for July 2024 has been postponed as the intricate rerouting of utility pipes and cables, including sewers, is taking longer than anticipated. Despite progress in constructing a new platform and other aspects of the project, the delay means Botley Road, closed under the rail bridge since April 2023, will not reopen in October as planned. Network Rail, along with contractor Kier and local authorities, is actively managing the situation to minimise disruption and ensure the project's successful completion. The collaborative efforts involve 11 utility providers navigating challenges such as outdated infrastructure, constrained spaces, and challenging ground conditions. Once finished, the upgrades should provide a larger and more efficient station, enhanced rail services, and improved local road networks with safer junctions, additional space for cyclists, and wider footpaths. HS2 has reached a significant milestone with the completion of the excavation of the Old Oak Common station underground box in west London. This underground structure, 20 meters deep with a 1.12-mile diaphragm wall, required the removal of 1.3 million tonnes of London Clay—enough to fill over 300 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Managed by Balfour Beatty VINCI SYSTRA joint venture (BBVS JV) and specialist contractor Expanded, the project involved installing 32,000 tonnes of steel rebar and 160 reinforced concrete columns to support the structure. Next steps include pouring the final sections of the base slab and preparing for the construction of six 450-meter-long platforms for HS2 trains. Additionally, plans are underway for the roof structure and the installation of two giant tunnel boring machines later this year.
