Did you know that food systems are estimated to be responsible for around a third of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, half of which is caused by food loss and waste? Food sent to landfills generates large volumes of methane, which is up to 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas. We are pleased to be working with The Global FoodBanking Network and the Global Methane Hub to develop a methodology for measuring the volume of methane that can be avoided by food banks. This means food banks around the world will now be able to use the methodology to better measure and understand how to reduce methane from food collection and distribution, while also tackling hunger and food waste. How can smallholder farmers, who lack the resources, transition to more sustainable practices? To encourage a just transition, we worked with Mexico’s Trust Funds for Rural Development (FIRA), Agence Française de Développement and the EU's LACIF - Latin American and Caribbean Investment Facility to create a dedicated loan programme with financial incentives and technical assistance that help farmers in agriculture, livestock, forestry, and fisheries. The loans offered through the programme support sustainable agriculture, protecting farmers’ land and livelihoods. https://lnkd.in/e7NACkiZ
