We believe gut health should be a right, not a privilege!

About us

The Gut Stuff started as a passion project by Lisa & Alana Macfarlane. While volunteering for twin research for Tim Spector, they participated at the forefront of scientific research into nutrition and the microbiome. Discovering that despite being identical twins, with 100% the same DNA but only around 30% the same gut bacteria, could explain their completely different health pathways. Research was also uncovering links between the gut microbiome and everything from immunity to mental health, and thus their gut journey began. With consumer knowledge low, science emerging quickly and the category disparate and spread across food, pharma and public healthcare, the girls dove into every inch of research, the market and, most importantly, what people knew and wanted. Gathering dietitians, nutritionists, GPs and scientists from each corner of microbiome research and thegutstuff.com was born – a hub to educate & empower. With a business built on education first they were able to launch products by listening and engaging with their community. They’ve since created an ecosystem to encourage daily gut habits. Their products range from diaries, fermenting kits, tools and resources for EVERYONE as well as a range of fibre bars which are stocked across grocery, high street and online. To bring gut health to the masses, they knew they’d also have to speak in places that weren’t expecting them, knowing they could disrupt workplace wellness one gut at a time. Their suite of talks and bitesize content has taken them everywhere from Balfour Beatty construction sites, the RAF, Visa, Facebook and Accenture. The business has grown rapidly but never lost it’s roots to make systematic change. This has seated them on the NHS Food Review board, authors of best-selling books with top experts and currently piloting modules for the UK School Curriculum. The company also achieved B Corp status this year.

What are we doing to help the NHS?   🚨 Most hospital admissions in 2022 were with a primary diagnosis of diseases of the digestive system (2.1 MILLION!) and with heart disease and type 2 diabetes being linked to gut health this COVERS a HUGE amount of NHS time and resource.   🚨10% of GPs' time is spent on digestive issues and yet 41% of those with symptoms never even seek medical advice   🚨28% of bowel cancer cases caused by eating too little fibre   The Gut Stuff Products alone will not change this. The Gut Stuff app alone will not change this. All the educational work we do in schools universities and businesses alone won’t change this.....   We need to make systemic change.   We (Lisa Macfarlane and I) are very proud to be on the NHS Food Review Board Committee and now to be the keynote speaker at the NHS Healthcare Catering Show in September,  very grateful that Philip Shelley FIH and team are as passionate as we are that gut health needs to be more regularly discussed and understood.   Time is tight for founders and businesses, but if we want to make REAL change on MASS we need to, quite literally, do it all..   For the sake of the nations health and healthcare system we need to take this sh*t seriously.   What more can we do and who wants to join our rally cry?!

Thank you to eatbigfish for including The Gut Stuff in their prestigious "challenger brands" report alongside the world's biggest brands like McDonald's and Barbie (!) To be totally honest, I’m always apprehensive when launching big campaigns or projects with a humerous ‘poo focus’ ...I worry that people won’t understand the severity of how important gut health is when we lead with that messaging. But I think always remembering the REASON for the marketing is to EDUCATE, helps shape the ideas behind the 'shock factor' !! We know in order to get people’s attention we’re not competing with other gut health brands but pop stars, sports and whatever's in the news. As a small brand there's a huge reputation, resource and financial risk doing such bold (and big) marketing.. .so which campaigns for us have reached millions of eye balls?... 💩 our nationwide OOH ‘how do you poo’ campaign with JCDecaux UK combining humour, education and a clinical tool - the Bristol stool chart, garnered a huge amount of earned media in the press from the Guardian to Sky News.. 💩Know your sh*t Channel 4 series combining humour, entertainment and heart, over 7 million viewers and 140+ pieces of PR 💩we’ve even managed to do it with the food range (combining poo and food - double apprehension!) with our campaign at train stations - ‘amazing going in even better coming out...’ 😉 Oh...and how could I forget the farting billboard in Manchester Trafford's centre's food court! It’s a constant tussle but we didn't set out on our mission to be safe and reach a few we held each other accountable to be bold and reach many... plus the poo name excel is somewhere I like to swim around in when the days as a founder get tough! https://lnkd.in/eGRNh2-b Lisa Macfarlane

A membership at a cost that won’t make you sh*t yourself! Lisa Macfarlane and I haven't been shy in admitting we have built The Gut Stuff backwards... 🤔 Brand before business model 😱 Physical product before digital 🤑 In our mission to make all our offerings affordable and accessible we have had to do some savage number crunchin… BUT... One thing we do agree on that we did right was focusing on our amazing community and listening to exactly what they asked for and finally it's all in 'one universe' (microbes included!) Our Gut Stuff Membership launched on our birthday this week AND at a cost that won't make you 💩 yourself! Well done to Annabel Sparrow MSc ANutr and Kevin Schmidt for getting this out into the world so quickly...!

At The Gut Stuff we hate that consumers think their gut health is a sh*t show… and what better day to launch our gut-changing app than to help the nation love themselves from the inside out !   We built this app over 18 months with our loyal gut gang and have developed the features and functions they asked for, at an affordable price point.   Hats off to our incredible team, with a special shoutout to Kevin Schmidt for his undeniable expertise and dedication and Annabel Sparrow MSc ANutr for wearing all the hats and swapping them on and off extremely quickly and efficiently!   We looked at consumer problems, behaviour and gut goals to allow EVERYONE to learn all about their own gut health but in a fun gamified way. We can't wait to see people take on gut challenges TOGETHER, earn points to democratise health and unlock a world of personalised insights.   PLUS something we’ve been wanting to offer for a long time to truly help people with gut issues... we’ve partnered with Sophie Medlin City Dietitians to provide 1-to-1 appointments with gut experts at a price tag we’re proud of.   This app is set to redefine the game! 🚀 #AppLaunch #GutHealth #TeamSuccess Lisa Macfarlane

As we come to the end of Probiota 2024, we had a great panel discussion hosted by Nikki Hancocks delving into communication challenges from experts at ZOE, The Gut Stuff, CityDietitians, and SandWalk. They agreed that honest marketing around the true benefits a product or service can offer for gut health was critical for consumer trust. It was also said that brands should offer immediate as well as long-term health goals for consumers, that utilise positive messaging would enhance adherence. #probiota

When we started championing guts, one of our main missions was to get gut health products (and conversations!) out of the shadows and back shelves and into front of store. What better place than till point eh? We love Holland and Barrett’s bold approach to the category and we’re delighted to partner with them across lots of areas of the business to have the GUTS (and time!) to educate customers from the inside out ;)
