About us
Hygiene Poverty is a lot closer than you think. 14 million people in the UK live in poverty and 4.5 million of those are children. The Hygiene bank gives hygiene & personal care essentials to those living in poverty in the UK. Who are we? We are a registered charity made possible by volunteers. Driven by a belief that hygiene is not a privilege but a basic right, we encourage each local community to donate products. We then collect, sort and distribute these essential items to those of us that can't afford them via charity, government and voluntary organisations in their local community. Donate local, help local: Each Hygiene Bank is mapped with one or more local beneficiaries so that everything donated stays in the area and helps that local community. Breaking the stigma: Hygiene is about self-confidence along with physical and mental wellbeing. We know lack of access to hygiene products can cause trauma and anxiety in those who are vulnerable. With hygiene poverty comes a social stigma that affects all areas of life; work, school and relationships. Join us in our mission is to tackle hygiene poverty in the UK: We believe no-one should be left struggling to wash their hair, brush their teeth, change their baby's nappy as often as needed or be unable to afford period products because of low wages, high housing costs, benefit cuts, illness, bereavement, redundancy, zero hours contracts or situations like abuse. Last week, we launched our latest campaign 'Hiding in Plain Sight' in Manchester and Birmingham to raise awareness about hygiene poverty. The outdoors ads, designed by ACNE London and displayed by Ocean Outdoor, expose the silent crisis hygiene poverty is, with 4.2 million adults in the UK not being able to afford basics like toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, laundry detergent or tampons. The Ocean Outdoor technology uses interactive screens to draw people in, and they then discover the shocking truth about the characters; they are living in hygiene poverty and cannot fully participate in society because they cannot afford basic hygiene items. The ads prompt people to pop by the nearest Boots store, purchase a basic hygiene item and donate it to The Hygiene Bank using the donation points in-store. The 'Hiding in Plain Sight' campaign was selected winner during the 2023 Ocean Outdoor Digital Creative Competition and has been possible thanks to the collaboration between ACNE London, Ocean Outdoor, Boots UK and The Hygiene Bank. This summer, your donation to The Hygiene Bank has doubled the impact thanks to Unilever. From now until August 27th, buy essential hygiene products from Dove, Tresemme, Sure, Lynx, Radox, Shea Moisture, Simple, and Vaseline at your Boots UK store and Unilever will donate a product to The Hygiene Bank. The partnership between The Hygiene Bank, Unilever and Boots has delivered the monumental product donation of 1.5 million hygiene products in the past four years, making a significant difference to thousands of people across the UK affected by hygiene poverty. The summer months pose additional challenges for families experiencing hygiene poverty, as they face additional costs for childcare and activities as well as the usual costs for buying food and paying the bills, making access to essential hygiene products even more critical.
