Laura Brosnan, Doctoral Student in Clinical Psychology, School of Health in Social Science at The University of Edinburgh is researching the relationship between menopause and disordered eating. You are invited to participate if you are an adult woman aged 40 years or over and are able to understand the English language. The research involves completion of a 15-20 minute survey online at a time that is convenient to you. This is a really under-researched area that is badly needed in order to ensure appropriate supports and services can be put in place for women experiencing menopause and issues in relation to eating behaviours and body image. We want the whole world talking about the menopause. At a Menopause Café people, often strangers, gather to eat cake, drink tea and discuss menopause. Our Menopause Cafés are offered: - In an accessible, respectful and confidential space - Open for all, regardless of gender or age - With no intention of leading people to any conclusion, product or course of action - On a not for profit basis - Alongside refreshing drinks and cake! We are also proud organisers of the world's first Menopause Festival. #FlushFest is back in 2021 and we have gone virtual! At the same time, my mother had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and I felt my least capable at a time when family pressures increased. Watching BBC Breakfast one morning in 2015, I was introduced to the story of The Yorkshire Rows and my life began to change. Their epic adventure across 3000 miles of Atlantic ocean gave me something to hold on to. They were a beacon of hope for me and I knew that 'this too shall pass' and there would be better days ahead. 9 years later, I'm on the cusp of following in their oar strokes and rowing the Atlantic myself. The aim is to break a record that has stood for almost 25 years and be the oldest woman to complete this challenge solo at 59! This is HUGE. This is IMPORTANT. I'm not talking about for me personally but celebrating the achievements of mid-life women everywhere in the UK and for giving hope to those going through menopause, hopefully demonstrating there is light at the end of the tunnel. HRT is great for some people, but not for all. And for many, it's best used in combination with other approaches like being more active, eating more healthily and learning how to relax and cope with stress better. We need a holisitc approach tailored for each individual, depending on their symptoms.

Firstly, having a new role to champion women's health in the NHS is fantastic, even if it's been way too long coming. Secondly, having someone with a balanced viewpoint about menopause treatment is also amazing. HRT prescriptions have increased by 50 per cent in the past year, which is great news for women who are benefitting from it. However, as Dr Mann explains In this Daily Telegraph article, HRT is not something that every woman should be given automatically at menopause age. And some women can't take it due to their medical history or conditions. Diet, lifestyle, emotional support are also vital in managing a complex array of symptoms that women can experience at this stage of life. I don't believe any 'one size fits all' approach is at all helpful, we are all unique. Let's encourage informed choice for each of us over how we manage our own health. What do you think? xx

Our café is open to anyone (regardless of gender or age) to come together to have a chat, grab a drink, laugh, cry and talk about the menopause. Creating a friendly and safe environment for all. Menopause Cafes are an opportunity to drink tea and coffee and talk about menopause with no preset agenda. They are free and open to everyone regardless of age and gender.
