We help leaders and high performing teams turn their ‘what’ into ‘WOW!’

About us

Every day you and your teams experience moments that matter. The moments that can create change, build connections, and deepen relationships. The moments that hit your top and bottom line. But too many of those moments get snuffed out and dismissed as corporate ‘blah’ because they are seen as irrelevant, confusing, or boring. That’s where we can help you. At The Story Spotters we take your moments that matter and help you ignite them through the art, craft, and science of story. When you work with us, we’ll use story in four ways. 1️⃣ The stories you spot, shape and share. 2️⃣ The stories you trigger through your behaviour. 3️⃣ The stories you hear through present, warm, and powerful conversation. 4️⃣ The stories of self-belief you tell yourself about yourself. But why story? Because it’s how we’re wired. It’s how we analyse our lives. It’s how we solve our problems. It’s how we decide to act. ✅ Story is where evidence meets inspiration. ✅ Story is where facts meet feelings. ✅ Story is where head meets heart. Story is the superhighway to making moments matter. Whether it’s a sales programme, a strategic shift, a brand positioning, or any other situation that needs change, it’s story that turns your 'what' into ‘WOW!' George Bernard Shaw once said that ‘The single biggest problem with communication is the illusion that it has taken place.’ That’s not good enough today. We want a world where every moment that matters bursts into life, and you wipe out the cost of miscommunication. You deserve it. We are The Story Spotters. We'll help you ignite your moments that matter.

It’s finally here. The name of our new book. And the logo that goes with it. ‘The DNA of Engagement’ is a story-based approach to building trust and influencing change. Thank you Aviva for giving us the ‘laboratory conditions’ to bring all our experience and thinking into one practical and applicable programme that we like to call ‘serious fun.’ Recently we were sent this. ‘That was one of the best training sessions I’ve ever had. I wish there was a book for those who want to do some follow-on reading.’ In October that wish will be granted. And everyone we coach, train or consult will be given a copy.

'Nice pink cover David. But what exactly will I find inside The DNA of Engagement?' 🧐 An excellent question. And one that Sarah Jane McKechnie and I will happily answer by showing you the Table of Contents in the attached document. ✍️ Hope you enjoy it. By the way ... on Friday I will be inviting our Insiders Team to download an advance copy of the book. If you'd like to join them all you have to do is sign up to our newsletter by clicking the link in my bio. ✍️ Over the last year I've got very used to shortening 'Table of Contents' to TOC. Is it called that because it's what makes a book tick?

IT'S 45 DAYS TO PUBLICATION! But The DNA of Engagement heads out into the world this week. On Friday Sarah Jane and I took delivery of 150 copies of our book. This Wednesday thirty of them will join me on a flight to Jersey. And by Thursday evening they'll all be living in the homes of our first clients to receive them. This marks the start of a new chapter for The Story Spotters in which everyone we work with will get a copy of The DNA of Engagement. To say we're excited is a major understatement. Over the next six weeks I'm going to be sharing some snippets from what you'll all be able to read on October 17th. And I'll no doubt throw in a few 'holiday snaps' from our kid's travels. We're really looking forward to having you along for the ride. 📷 Of course Friday's delivery provided the perfect photo opportunity. I'm just slightly concerned that Mabel and Sarah Jane conspired to suggest that The DNA of Engagement might also double nicely as a litter tray. 🙀

    It's 45 Days to launch.

This week three conversations about three new opportunities have focused on the same three leadership traits. 1️⃣ Trust 2️⃣ Empathic Leadership 3️⃣ Psychological Safety It seems that a lot of work is being done on the theory behind these elements but people are asking how they work together and how they can be practically applied. As these conversations have unfolded Sarah Jane and I have started to realise that The DNA of Engagement could well be the sweet spot that begins to answer that question. 🥇 It focuses on building mutual understanding. 🥈 It balances care with the need for results. 🥉 It creates the space for candour and collaboration. Key ingredients that underpin trust, pragmatic empathy and psychological safety. On Monday it will be 45 days to launch and we're both excited to spend those days sharing more of what you will read from October 17th. Have a great weekend and see you next week.

This is a truly wonderful post by Anne Morriss. It takes the concept of servant leadership to the next level and I recommend that you a) read it and b) follow Anne. In the comments I suggested a build on something she has already written. And I did it because it fires up the imagination of the listener and puts them in story mode. 'If we're sitting here in six months time and you say to me, 'When you did x that was an amazing help to my journey' what would x be?' Let me know how you would add an element that would fire the neurons and get your listener imagining a future for themselves.

In response to popular demand, Frances and I are sharing some of our favorite “high devotion” signals, both questions you can ask and statements you can make to reveal your commitment to someone else's success. Questions: How can I help?   If you could change something about your role, what would it be?   What’s getting in the way of you doing your very best work?   What’s most energizing to you about this job?   What’s least energizing to you about this job?   Tell me about your best days here, what are the key features?  Tell me about your worst days here, what frustrates or demotivates you? What are the emotions you feel most frequently in this role?  What should I know about how to set you up for wild success?  How does this role fit into your long-term plans/goals/dreams? Statements: Here’s what I love about working with you…  The impact I know you can have on this team…  I really appreciated the approach you took when…  The ways you make this team better are…  I hired you because I saw [X] in you…  When you have my job someday…  When you’re running this company someday…  When you start your own company someday…  The connection between your role and our strategy is…  The connection between your role and our mission is… What else would you add to this list? Note: we mentioned this list in our latest #Fixable episode, where we talk about how to bring out the best in other people. Link to the episode in comments. Ziggy the wonder dog has set us up beautifully for the final run in to launch.

Back to work after a long weekend with this legend. Ziggy is the wonder dog that belongs to my son Charlie and his wife Sophie. It's literally impossible to be depressed when you are woken up by 30lbs of fully articulated joy who screams, 'What? I get to do life again? For a full day???' I love him!! This is a relatively easy week of planning and meetings from home before I go into an insane 45 days leading up to the launch of The DNA of Engagement. Lots of marketing (of course) and three trips away to deliver DNA workshops. In fact those teams will be the first people to hold a physical copy in their hands. Do you think I'll be taking any photos of that? Does Ziggy come to whistle? Anyway, have a great week. And remember ... No colleague or client comes to whistle (at least not willingly). You need to connect through understanding. (By using the DNA) (I'll stop using parentheses now)

Excellent work DNA. Next time I'd like you to use the word 'because'. But a very good effort. 7.5/10.

Dear LinkedIn, Yesterday Dad took me on a train to London. On the way up Dad had a coffee and I made a new friend called Glue. Glue's Dad is called John Dore. I like Glue because we think about the same things, like how people can talk better to each other and get stuff done quickly and without fighting. I think me and Glue are going to see each other again soon. Dad is taking me to the Business Book Awards in a few weeks and Glue will be there cos he might win one. I hope so. Glue is cool. When we got to London Dad took me to the bit where Sherlock Holmes used to live. We couldn't go into his house cos there were lots of people with cameras outside and Dad had a meeting around the corner at the London Business School. Maybe we will do it next time. Dad says that if I'm good we might get invited back to the school with my Mum Sarah Jane so we can talk to some grown ups who run big companies. After Dad's meeting we went for lunch at The RSA (The royal society for arts, manufactures and commerce). Dad is a what they call a fellow there. While he had a sandwich I played in the library with some bigger kids. There was a nice lady called Anna who looks after the big kids and she said that she'd talk to some people about me coming to play with them lots more. After lunch I was tired and Dad had to work with a man. So I went to sleep in his bag. Dad's bag. Not the man's bag. That would have been weird. Anyway, yesterday was a good day. It's my birthday soon. But you probably already know that cos Dad never shuts up about it. Have a nice weekend and I will see you on Monday. Love The DNA of Engagement

If you want to succeed you've got to be the GOAT. And I don't mean the Greatest Of All Time. I mean the Greatest Of All Teams. But it's so easy to get wrong. Sarah Jane and I saw this in action during our annual sprint of seventeen shows in three and a half days at the Edinburgh Festival. In tomorrow's newsletter I'm going to dive into some of the reasons behind this and look at what can be done to make sure it doesn't happen for you and your team. 🧬🧬🧬🧬🧬🧬🧬🧬🧬 The DNA of Engagement® will be released on October 17th. Very soon I'll be sending an advance copy to the Insiders Team. If you'd like to join me and Sarah Jane on the inside then please sign up by clicking the link to my newsletter in my profile.
