Wildwood Trust plays a pivotal role in creating the world’s largest and most comprehensive knowledge base on over 22,000 species 🌎🦬🦎🐿️ As a member of global nonprofit Species360, Wildwood Trust contributes data on the animals and groups in its care every day, from lifecycle traits to environmental needs. That information is recorded in the Species360 Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS), now 50 years old and the world's largest source of data on species. To date, Wildwood has contributed data on more than 3,149 animals and 196 species, subspecies, and breeds to Species360 ZIMS. ZIMS combines the data from Wildwood Trust with contributions from like-minded species conservation institutions worldwide. The result changes what is known about animals and their environments, including insight into disease treatment, animal welfare, population health, and species conservation. “We are proud to be a part of this international effort and its impact on animal welfare and wildlife conservation. As part of our commitment to conservation and animal welfare, we meticulously record data on our animal collections. This ensures our animals receive the best care and contributes to species population management and conservation. By continuing to share our knowledge and expertise, we can make even greater strides in protecting the planet’s biodiversity," said Tyrone Capel, Conservation Project Officer and Research Coordinator at Wildwood Kent. Wildwood Kent, like other zoos, aquariums, and wildlife facilities worldwide, uses ZIMS to stay well informed about each animal and group. For instance, Species360 Global Medical Resources, part of the ZIMS for Medical module, helps veterinarians treat and prevent diseases by providing benchmarks for normal blood test results. And ZIMS for Studbooks is utilised by Wildwood and conservation teams worldwide to ensure the genetic diversity and health of animal populations in human care. This is critical for reintroduction programs, where conservation institutions work to reestablish native species in their natural habitats, ensuring these populations are healthy and sustainable. Wildwood Trust is dedicated to the protection, conservation and reintroduction of native species. We not only participate in many British wildlife breeding programs but we also compile the Kent Hazel dormouse studbook and assist in the management of the red-billed chough and pine marten studbooks ensuring a healthy and robust zoo population is available for reintroduction into suitable habitats; ZIMS for Studbooks provides the necessary data management tools to safeguard genetically healthy populations for the future! #wildwoodtrust #wildwoodtrustuk #britishwildlife #conservation

Over two decades ago, in partnership with @kentwildlife , we pioneered the UK’s first beaver reintroduction trial right here in Kent. We have long understood the profound benefits these remarkable creatures bring to our ecosystems. By creating wetlands, improving water quality, and boosting biodiversity, beavers help shape healthier and more resilient landscapes. We are proud that Kent now supports the largest population of wild beavers in the UK. These experiences have taught us that with thoughtful planning and collaboration, we can create environments where both people and wildlife thrive together. We are thrilled to see the publication of The Wildlife Trusts’ report, A Vision for the Return of Beavers to England and Wales. This crucial document underscores the significant role that beavers play as ecosystem engineers, capable of transforming landscapes and enhancing the resilience of our natural environments to the impacts of climate change. As the movement to restore beavers to their rightful place in our rivers and wetlands gains momentum across England and Wales, Wildwood Trust remains committed to supporting these efforts.
