Tughans LLP welcomed guests to a morning seminar to discuss ‘Is your Planning Permission worth the paper it is written on?’ this week and we were delighted to be joined by guest speakers Gregory Jones KC & Conor Fegan BL as well as Tughans LLP Head of Department for Environment and Planning, Maria O'Loan. Following a number of recent high-profile cases, including the Supreme Court’s decision In Finch, the Court of Appeal decision in the Gas Caverns and Friends of the Earth Judicial Review and the Court of Appeal in CG Fry, our guests speakers discussed the planning and environmental risks and implications that should be considered around existing and future planning permissions in light of the recent case law and appeal decisions. Tughans LLP Fiona Kirkpatrick recently commented on the judgment in the case of Rahman v Hassan (2024 EWHC 1290 Ch) and its ruling on the validity and scope of donationes mortis causa, or 'gifts in contemplation of death'. In a notable development, the Court has now granted the defendants permission to appeal the original decision on five of their eight submitted grounds. Today another group from the Tughans LLP team kindly donated blood to the Northern Ireland Blood Transfusion Service, this time in Andersontown, in support of our charity partner Leukaemia & Lymphoma NI. The Northern Ireland Blood Transfusion Service fully supplies the needs of all hospitals and clinical units in the province responsible for the collection, testing and distribution of over 55,000 blood donations each year. This is vital to support Leukaemia and Lymphoma patients in their recovery – just 1 blood donation can save up to 3 lives.   “Giving blood is near and dear to my heart. My mum Lorraine was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in 2007 and our world was turned upside down pretty much overnight. After undergoing chemotherapy, full body irradiation and a stem cell transplant, she is now doing incredibly well.
