About us

UMAS is a sector focussed, commercial advisory service that draws upon the world leading research of the UCL Shipping Team combined with the advisory and management system expertise of MATRANS. We are the largest university based consultancy on energy and environment matters related to shipping with over 50 years collective experience on this subject. UMAS undertakes research using models of the shipping system, shipping big data (including satellite Automatic Identification System data), and qualitative and social science analysis of the policy and commercial structure of the shipping system. Research and consultancy is centred on understanding patterns of energy demand in shipping and how this knowledge can be applied to help shipping transition to a low-carbon future. UMAS is world-leading on two key areas; using big data to understand trends and drivers of shipping energy demand or emissions and using models to explore what-ifs for future markets and policies.

    "We note with interest the recent modelling undertaken by UMAS and Arup, examining how a domestic clean ammonia facility could significantly benefit the take-up of zero-emission maritime fuels for ferries operating across the North Sea from Newcastle."- Net Zero & UK Shipping, Seventh Report of Session 2023–24. The House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee released their latest report from the seventh Report of Session 2023–24, which features insights from our latest joint report with Arup, ‘Opportunities for the UK to kick-start shipping’s transition to zero emission fuel’. The report highlights our case study, which illustrates how the establishment of a green ammonia production facility in the North East of England could deliver emission savings aligned with the International Maritime Organization's most ambitious scenarios for 2030. A key input, and hence cost, to the production of ammonia is renewable electricity, the cost of which varies across the globe in part due to changes in solar and wind potentials. Our study showed that despite the higher cost of renewable energy in the windy but not sunny UK, the UK still has an opportunity to lead the transition to green fuels and, in the process, capture the environmental and economic benefits of establishing local production facilities. This first-mover action is particularly attractive if existing infrastructure can be leveraged to reduce capital costs and thus downstream green fuel cost. The inclusion of our work marks a significant acknowledgement of our research's value and relevance. We are pleased to see our research contribute to important discussions driving forward the decarbonisation agenda advocating for necessary investments and innovations in the maritime sector.     Recently Global Maritime Forum and RMI published a report investigating the future of green ammonia and green methanol within the shipping industry's supply chain. Our UMAS team had the privilege of participating in the stakeholder feedback sessions and reviewing the final contents of this report, which underlines our commitment to the maritime sector's decarbonisation efforts.   The report presents a detailed analysis of the development potential for green ammonia and green methanol as fuels for shipping by 2030. To uncover these insights, the study incorporated perspectives from various stakeholders across different geographies, making it a valuable reference for anyone seeking an updated review of projected prices for green ammonia and methanol. Additionally, the report outlines strategic initiatives and partnerships that ports can adopt to become pioneers in establishing green methanol and ammonia bunkering facilities by 2030.     We’re pleased to announce the release of our latest study, “Calculating the cost gap: Western Australia–East Asia iron ore green shipping corridor”. In collaboration with the Global Maritime Forum this study presents a focused assessment of the key sources, costs, and sensitivities involved in delivering green ammonia to fuel this corridor.    The report assesses the costs associated with implementing a zero-emission fleet along these specific routes. Our approach was carefully tailored within a framework shaped by compliance considerations. With the shifting landscape where traditional business-as-usual metrics no longer suffice, our decisions now hinge on commercial assessments that anticipate future regulatory trends. Through innovative partnerships and the mobilisation of demand for green shipping, these corridors can serve as catalysts, not only reducing emissions on specific routes but also setting a precedent for global industry practices.      Our work on this with the Global Maritime Forum has enabled us to outline tangible steps, focusing on critical areas including the development of viable fuel pathways and commercial demand. Indicative checkpoints for 2030 and 2040 now looking to be baked in with the specification of the fuel standard, therefore requiring ~90% reduction in GHG emissions intensity (gCO2e per unit of transport work) by 2040 2. Member state support has grown for a price on carbon through a levy in combination with a fuel standard 3. All options remain on the table as IMO edges closer to finalising policies to curb emissions next year 4.     Check out this reflection from Tristan Smith on COP28 and shipping. There are many helpful summaries out there but this one is should be relaxing for a Friday afternoon. "The most exciting part of the expo for me and many others was the Green Pioneer – Fortescue, inconveniently for some, letting the cat out of the bag that ammonia’s use as a marine fuel is eminently achievable with some fairly standard engineering solutions." Great work by Dr Charlotte Kirk and team at Fortescue

    Analysis by the LR Maritime Decarbonisation Hub and UMAS has found that international shipping could save 776 million tonnes of carbon dioxide cumulative emissions between 2024 and 2050 by progressively adopting green steel. This highlights the interconnectedness of the shipping and steel sectors and the need for collaboration in strengthening decarbonisation efforts to achieve net-zero targets by 2050.
