Funding Research Collaborations for Wicked Problems in Financial Services.
About us
Funding Research Collaborations for Wicked Problems in Financial Services. UKFin+ is a £2.5M programme of funding, tackling wicked problems in financial services. The project aims to grow a network across the UK to increase collaboration across regions, between academics and industry. Financial services have been subject to unprecedented technological changes over recent years, and this increasing reliance on technology though beneficial also comes with associated risks, leading financial services to have a wicked problem. UKFin+ will distribute funding to researchers and businesses to carry out projects tackling wicked problems in financial services. The results of these projects will then be shared across a nationwide network to benefit the wider fintech sector.

Marble 2024 (https://lnkd.in/eSQwdKgD) has proceeded to the second day, with more great talks on Blockchain economy, Defin, TradeFin, Stablecoins, fraud and many more hot topics. I am delighted to be part of it, in particular, chairing the FCA talk and the Technical session on "DeFi and Cryptocurrencies". There are many highlights from the fantastic talk given by Pavle Avramović (FCA). But what encourages and excites me is to see the regulatory body like FCA to adopt an innovative mindset and forward-looking view to engage with the market and academics. Different from the usual impression that the regulations tend to fall behind the market, they seem to be riding the wave with the market in the blockchain economy space and are open-minded to be test beds through initiatives such as tech sprints etc. It was also great fun to seamlessly work with Pavle Avramović and William Knottenbelt to promote UKFin+ Network. The forthcoming spotlight that UKFin+ Network will nurture appear to get the techies at the conference talking and things like "disruptive technology", "technology disruption", "market disruption", "disruptive market patterns" etc. repeatedly come up in the conversations. I look forward to seeing deeper conversations, projects and applications landing at my desk. Thank you to everyone who attended our first “wicked lunch” on one of the wicked problems facing Financial Services: Stablecoins. We had a brilliant discussion chaired by Professor Daniel Broby, PhD, a member of the UKFin+ advisory board and Professor of Financial Technology at Ulster University. Thank you to our fantastic panel of industry and academic experts: Lory Kehoe CEO of MSX, Martin Dowdall Senior Managing Associate at Sidley Austin LLP, Guneet Kaur University of Stirling PhD student focusing on digital money and privacy concerns surrounding CBDCs. Each panellist started with a short presentation on their area of expertise and then discussed 3 key areas for the wicked problem of stablecoins: 🌟 Market Adoption and Industry Impact – industry adoption, challenges, and outlook. 🌟 Legal and Regulatory Landscape – regulatory hurdles and compliance. 🌟 Academic and Research Insights – recent research and future directions It was a fascinating and vibrant panel discussion and we hope this will be the first of many online bite-sized debates! How can we make community finance more accessible? Back in March, the TPA brought together experts from across the payments industry to discuss how to make community finance solutions more accessible. Karen Elliott, Chair in Finance and Fintech, Business School, University of Birmingham stated “We need a body to draw this together to lobby as one voice for people who need access to community finance”. In response, we’ve released our whitepaper “Redefining community finance: unlocking pathways to financial inclusion” where we aimed to highlight policies to help tackle today’s financial exclusion challenges. Download our whitepaper today to become part of the journey to unlocking access to financial services for underserved individuals: https://lnkd.in/e3qH85yq #CommunityFinance #Payments #FinTech
