In July, we launched a new Directory of Humanitarian Academic Research Centres in the UK to support the process of locating, and accessing relevant UK humanitarian academic expertise for timely and effective crisis response. Now, Ana Florescu and Kiran Dulay at Science Practice have provided an overview of the types of expertise academics can bring to humanitarian crises, ways of engaging with them, and considerations when exploring collaborations. Ahead of World Humanitarian Day tomorrow (19 August), we’re recognising the dedicated humanitarians who work tirelessly to provide critical health care, shelter, food, protection, clean water, and more. Meet Salma (pictured left), a frontline worker leading community-driven vaccine delivery efforts in Nigeria. This important work is part of our PULSE project, aimed at building evidence and establishing a practice network to support community-led vaccine deployment strategies in humanitarian settings. The PULSE project is led by the Geneva Centre of Humanitarian Studies in collaboration with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, U. of London, Addis Ababa University School of Public Health (Ethiopia), and Childcare and Wellness Clinics (Nigeria). We’re also working closely with operational partners, including the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC, and the National Societies of Ethiopia and Nigeria.
