It must be c.15 years ago I attended the Advertising Association’s Media Business Course as a syndicate leader. It was a fantastic course, that I’ve been a strong advocate of ever since. Yesterday, on its 60th anniversary, it was an absolutely pleasure to convene the first day with Kat Bozicevich and hear from the amazing Rory Sutherland, 💥 Amy Kean 💥 and Hamid Habib, alongside 2 of last years winners! Thanks to Sharon Lloyd Barnes, Suzanne Costello (She/her) and Phoebe Sallitt for allowing me to get involved. Good luck to all the delegates cracking the brief.

Here at UM, we're so excited that tomorrow is Impact Day, UM’s annual Global Day of Service, dedicated to making a positive difference in our communities. Each year, over 3,200 UMers come together for Impact Day. These efforts culminate in numerous community give-back activities, with micro-actions that collectively drive significant change to create a better tomorrow. This year, the One UM Global community is focusing on Equity, Sustainability, and Wellness. From serving lunch to elderly residents through our local UK charity partner FCV Dorcas - Finsbury & Clerkenwell Volunteers, to partnering with Humana in Italy to promote sustainable agriculture and support marginalised communities, and preparing 200 free meals for those in need in Greece through Organization Earth - Οργάνωση ΓΗ- our impact is widespread and meaningful. The latest IPA (Institute of Practitioners in Advertising) TouchPoints data reveals a consumer marketplace that is fraught with financial pressures, with 4 in 10 Brits struggling to cope financially. Our Group Insight Director, Kim Lambert, shared her assessment with The Media Leader UK, citing stats from our recent Money Talks research, powered up in partnership with Campaign Against Living Miserably and Moneysupermarket Group: “We know from our research that brands need to do more: only 12% of the UK agreed that brands are doing enough to ease consumers’ concerns over the cost-of-living crisis. This is a time for brands to help consumers by showing them how their product or service adds value to their lives and by communicating how they’re helping to make a difference. If done right, it’s not seen as being exploitative but rather as being sensitive to the times people are living through.”

This recognition underscores our commitment to using media as a catalyst for responsible growth and positive change. We couldn't have achieved this special award without our team of people who care so passionately about the communities we serve and the work that we do on behalf of our clients. Their dedication and creativity have driven the success of the amazing projects we've been awarded for, constantly pushing the boundaries of what's possible. Our award paper highlighted a number of key initiatives including UK by UM, our research and thought leadership programme, which has been driving insights for brands to combat harmful stereotypes in advertising since 2017; and The Media Responsibility Index, launched in 2020, which has been pivotal in establishing principles for brand safety in the digital landscape. We are also incredibly proud of our Better World Media Directory, created in 2021 to highlight and drive investment towards media publishers and platforms serving underrepresented communities. Our partnership with UN Women UK and the Unstereotype Alliance continues to be a cornerstone of our efforts to develop media strategies that foster trust and inclusivity.
