"If you focused solely on the Japanese industry, you would be forgiven for forgetting the crisis that has subsumed the wider industry." After Microsoft's shutdown of Tango Gameworks, it's clear that Japan's gaming industry stands out for its stability amidst #globallayoffs While layoffs hit hard elsewhere, Japanese companies like FromSoftware, Inc. and Capcom are not only keeping staff but also boosting wages. This resilience is due in part to Japan's strong employee protections and a thriving #mobilegaming market. To mirror Japan's success, other countries, like the UK, could strengthen employee protections, prioritize long-term stability over short-term gains and foster domestic markets that reduce reliance on international sales. Investing in local talent and creating supportive work environments could also help build a more resilient industry globally. #ADDvantage #ADDvalue https://lnkd.in/ecKW5v8u

OIE! Mouse Jigglers! 🐭 Wells Fargo gave more than a dozen employees the boot for using sneaky "mouse jigglers" to fake productivity. While the cat-and-mouse game between remote workers and monitoring tools rages on, the real win might be for companies to rethink how they measure productivity 🖱 https://lnkd.in/gUrCtN73

How many of us, whether in tech or using AI regularly now, know about the workers in the global south, out of our western view, doing the hard work in poor conditions to 'train' #AI algorithms and moderate extreme content from social media? Data annotators like Anita in Gulu, Uganda, review endless footage to train AI, earning around $200 a month. They work in call center-like environments, performing repetitive tasks under tight surveillance. This tedious, high-pressure work is crucial for developing AI technologies but takes a heavy toll on workers' mental and physical health. Behind the sleek image of AI, millions of workers endure harsh conditions to make these technologies function. The demand for data annotation is booming, driven by the growing use of AI in various sectors. Despite promises of economic opportunity, the reality is often exploitation and minimal job security for workers in the global south. It is vital that we learn about and highlight the working conditions of tech workers worldwide to promote better industry practices. #educationforchange https://lnkd.in/emh53y7N
