Women20 UK: Working for equality

About us

W20 (Women20) was established by G20 in 2015 as an independent advisory group to advise on women's equality. The UK Government appointed their own delegates as W20 UK. Each of the G20 nations has their own advisory group, all independently appointed. The location of the Summit moves each year as the G20 moves and W20 reports to the G20 each year with a Communiqué with their change recommendations which must be a consensus, and not voted for as a majority. All delegates provide their knowledge and expertise on a voluntary basis.

#G20Brasil #W20Brasil #TrilhadeFinanças #EquidadedeGênero #EmpoderamentoEconômico —------------ The W20 is the G20's engagement group focused on gender equity and the economic empowerment of women, composed of 130 delegates from civil society, academia, and social entrepreneurship across the G20 countries. During the G20 Finance Track meeting on July 22 in Rio de Janeiro, the Leader of the W20 Brazil Delegation, Adriana Carvalho, shared insights on challenges and opportunities, including: • In 2015, countries committed to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including gender equity: all goals are interconnected and ignoring half of the population cannot achieve them; • Since 2014, the G20 has renewed commitments to reduce the gender gap in the workforce, but progress has been slow and sometimes declining; • In this context, it is essential to adopt financial solutions that integrate the importance of the care economy and include a gender perspective; • To go beyond commitments, the G20 must ensure accountability, monitor, and report on funding initiatives; • When women receive support and opportunities, they invest in their children's education and their communities' well-being, promoting national prosperity. “We invite everyone to join this journey, which requires intention, funds, metrics, and an explicit reference to the gender lens,” Adriana emphasized in her conclusions. These proposals place gender equity at the center of economic development, with a focus on. "Our expectation is to primarily address the themes of women's economic and financial autonomy through entrepreneurship and employability. We also want to draw attention to the financial appreciation of care work, which is absolutely fundamental, predominantly carried out by women, but not properly valued." emphasized Fontes. W20 Chair Ana Fontes attended the "Joint session with G20 engagement groups" on July 4th. Like all 13 leaders present, she delivered her speech. _____ Ladies and gentlemen, I am Ana Fontes, President of Women W20, and I would like to express my gratitude to the Brazilian team for hosting this important gathering of engagement groups. I also extend my greetings to my fellow delegates present here today. I want to draw your attention to the overwhelming evidence, as demonstrated by numerous studies conducted by the World Bank and various consultancies, that clearly establishes the link between women's and girls' economic empowerment and the growth of national economies. When women's incomes rise, they invest heavily in the education, health, and well-being of their families and communities. Despite the commitments made by G20 leaders in recent years to uphold the Brisbane commitments – including care infrastructure, redistribution of unpaid care, a financial code for women entrepreneurs, and addressing violence against women – we have seen little progress in terms of concrete and effective actions. We need to accelerate change, secure funding, and take responsibility for driving progress. We have the opportunity to make history by ensuring that women and girls have a more just and dignified life. We call on all of you: To support the half of G20 members that are still lagging behind the Brisbane commitments and to go beyond, as recommended in the Italy Leaders' Statement. To work together with the financial track to ensure that women entrepreneurs have better conditions to develop their businesses and gain access to markets through gender-sensitive procurement. To improve the participation of women and girls in STEM, especially in digital inclusion and AI. To definitively eliminate violence against women through clear, incisive policies and adequate funding. To establish public policies for the care economy, valuing care financially, sharing it, and recognizing it. To apply a gender lens to all climate issues, in order to achieve true climate justice. At W20, we are confident that you are all allies of this cause and will dedicate all your efforts to ensuring that commitments to women and girls continue to have a prominent place in the final declaration and that it can include further commitments for the effective implementation of actions. In closing, I would like to remind you that when a woman receives support and opportunities, she invests in improving the education of her children, the well-being of her family and community. Countries with less inequality are more prosperous, and we need women, who make up more than half of the population, to address the challenges facing the planet. A more just and inclusive society means not leaving the majority of the population behind. I invite you to join us on this journey that needs to move from rhetoric to action. Thank you. #w20brazil #g20 G20 Brasil 2024

Women 20, better known by its acronym W20, is one of the G20 Brasil 2024's independent engagement groups (G20 Social) focused on promoting gender equality and women's economic empowerment. With the aim of broadening the participation of civil society in decisions that directly affect everyone's lives, W20 gathers women from different fields, who meet in person and online, to draw up a document, called Communiqué, with two pages of recommendations for the G20 leaders. This year, the W20, like the G20, is chaired by Brazil and has as its recommendation agendas: women entrepreneurs, access to capital and access to markets; combating violence against women; the participation of women and girls in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics); climate justice from a gender perspective and the care economy. "The last two themes recommended by Brazil´s presidency are innovations and inclusions, as well as adding the perspective of race and ethnicity to all the recommendations. It's a victory, because previously we didn't consider these fundamental issues at W20", says Ana Fontes, president of W20 Brazil Delegation at an exclusive article for Folha de S.Paulo newspaper. My take on the launch of the Working for Women: A strategy for gender equality - genderequality.gov.au - by Katy Gallagher today coming out on the The Conversation Australia + NZ soon. Headlines are: - The Federal Government will pay superannuation on Paid Parental Leave from 1 July 2025. - Paid and unpaid care work must be better valued. Women currently account for 75% of disability carers, 87% of residential aged carers, and more than 90% of early childhood educators. - The Strategy will tackle structural medical biases leading to poorer health outcomes for women and girls, especially in relation to endometriosis and pelvic pain and menopause. - New Federal procurement rules will also be developed by the WGEA so that Australian businesses with 500 employees or more will be required to meet new gender equality targets if they want to win government contracts (worth $70 billion). These targets will focus on the gender makeup of their boards and the workforce; equal pay; flexible working arrangements; workplace consultation on gender equality; and efforts to prevent and address sexual harassment. Generally a really good strategy if delivered but I argue there is a big climate-shaped hole at its heart that will derail progress unless we truly understand the intersection between climate and gender at a strategy level. On procurement - my research on Gender Smart Procurement for Chatham House shows how effective these types of levers can be for gender equality with a great Australian case study by Louise McSorley. Yes, governments can and should 'buy change'. Did you know that public procurement accounts for around one-fifth of global gross domestic product (GDP) but it is estimated that women entrepreneurs/female-owned businesses supply only 1 per cent of this market?
