New case study: Southampton Shellfish Scheme An £85m scheme that applied innovative modelling to optimise storm volumes and adopted the new approach to final effluent disinfection. The Southampton Shellfish Scheme comprises the upgrade to four wastewater treatment works and one combined storm overflow discharging effluents to the Solent. The WINEP No Deterioration Shellfish Drivers have dual targets: (i) To reduce the number of intermittent storm discharges to 10 significant spills or less per year (as a 10-year average) for the agglomeration of assets impacting Southampton Shellfish Water, and; (ii) For the final effluent discharges, achieve a 6.6 log reduction in E. coli between crude sewage and the boundary of Southampton Shellfish Water. Additionally, WINEP U_IMP5 drivers resulting in an increase in flow to full treatment were applicable at some of the sites, therefore design and construction for all drivers were combined under the same project. The technical solutions considered during design included increasing the storm tank capacity and the hydraulic capacity of the wastewater treatment works to reduce the intermittent storm discharges, with UV irradiation or membranes being considered to achieve the disinfection requirements. New case study: Sleaford WRC: Utilising micro-organisms to break down, digest and clean wastewater, this nature-based reed bed solution reduces the need for chemical dosing. Sleaford is a small market town in the North Kesteven district of Lincolnshire. The town is situated on the edge of the fenlands, 11 miles from Grantham and 17 miles south of Lincoln. Sleaford Water Recycling Centre is located just off the A17, north-east of the town. Anglian Water was required to meet a new full flow to treatment (FFT) obligation that the current system could not achieve as it did not possess adequate hydraulic and biological treatment capacity or volume to comply with the new, higher FFT requirements. As a result, Anglian Water's @one Alliance was tasked with proposing a solution to meet the financial and operational requirements. Following a ROV5 (risk | opportunity | value) meeting, the team decided on the reed bed solution. This solution included the removal of standby generators by utilising the new aerated reed beds to provide 4 hours of treatment capacity in case of power failure and the use of a pumping station. The scheme also including re-purposing the existing storm tank to remove the need for a new piled final settlement tank (FST), which resulted in the re-use of the current scraper bridge and its internals were maintained. The solution of the side-stream process of a primary sedimentation tank (PST) and aerated reed beds to treat the additional flow was taken forward as the DM1 strategy. Witches Oak WTW: Green Recovery - Decarbonising Water Resources: The challenges of designing and constructing the Witches Oak programme of works on multiple sites to a condensed timescale. In the summer of 2020, the water industry was set a challenge by its regulators to identify ways to support the country’s green economic recovery from COVID-19. Severn Trent responded with several proposed programmes, including Decarbonising Water Resources (DWR). The objective of the DWR Programme is to provide additional treated water to Severn Trent’s water network in a low-carbon, reduced-chemical treatment way. The need for this additional water is based on the supply demand balance taking into account drought, climate change, the reduction in groundwater supplies and the need for more resilient water supplies. In 2020, Severn Trent secured the abstraction license for the River Trent from the decommissioned Rugeley power station. This license was for a peak abstraction of 93Ml/d and was appended by the Environment Agency Severn Trent’s existing site at Witches Oak. A fast-track scheme of such complexity requires an investment in innovation and a commitment to real collaboration to ensure the project thoroughly integrates design and construction to the highest health and safety standards. MWH Treatment’s in-house integrated design has been sequenced and prioritised to feed the site with construction drawings to achieve the challenging milestones. The pace of the construction and productivity on site has been impressive due to the dedication of the experienced project team and commitment of key subcontractors. The level of coordination and cooperation between trades and subcontractors has been first class and extended hours and weekend working have been deployed to mitigate delays from the unprecedented wet and windy winter. This prestigious project is on schedule to achieve completion in December 2025. New case study: Toplers Hill Water Tower: The refurbishment of a 90-year-old potable water storage tank in Bedfordshire without compromising water quality. Anglian Water’s Toplers Hill Water Tower is situated just off the A1, south of Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, on a site which includes both the water tower and a water reservoir. The tower was constructed in June 1934 and its condition has started to deteriorate with age. Following Anglian Water’s internal inspection of the water tower, areas of concern were identified regarding the roof, internal coatings and some of the access ladders, which would require replacement or refurbishment before the tower could be returned back to service without compromising water quality to customers. The option of replacing the water tower with cellular units was considered, however, due to minimal site spacing, it was discounted and the solution was to modify the existing asset. New case study: Northbridge Eel Regulations Compliance Project: Replacement of non-compliant intake screens with new complaint Intralox eel screens including the associated infrastructure & MEICA work. Northbridge is a key drinking water supply location with a large amount of upstream habitat available for eels. The intake is located 11km from the tidal limit on the right-hand bankside of the River Exe, Devon and is the intake for Pynes WTW. Abstraction occurs all year round, with typical abstraction rate between 30,000-40,000m3 per day with a maximum licenced flow is 66,450m3/day. Water is abstracted via two inlet lanes each consisting of a course and fine screen which feed a total of four pumps with the two lanes being able to be operated independently. All four pumps can be operated whilst one lane being closed if flow must be diverted around the closed lane using the actuated penstocks. The current screening will not meet 2025 statutory requirements and South West Water are addressing the issue now to ensure future compliance. This project will deliver improved screening at the Pynes WTW intake with Eel Regulations compliance, which is required by the end of AMP7, ensuring continued operational abstraction at the site ... New case study: Ise Valley Sewer Rehabilitation: Temporary overpumping solution facilitates CIPP re-lining using ultraviolet and water cure techniques. Ise Valley, Wellingborough, is home to the £1bn Stanton Cross housing development just off the B571 in the east of England. Parts of the development were struck with leaks in the underground rising mains, causing disruption to many new homeowners during the Christmas period. Anglian Water was made aware of several leaks on each of the 700mm ductile iron rising mains from Ise Valley Terminal Pumping Station (TPS), which pumps flows of up to 1500 l/s. Both rising mains are required for normal operation of the pumping station and to convey the maximum flow, however, surveys showed that both mains had reached the end of their asset life due to both internal and external corrosion, and further leaks would occur if no action was taken. Non-destructive testing confirmed external pitting and internal abrasion wearing in the upstream sections and an internal hydrogen sulphide (H2S) attack on the downstream section, which was determined to be the primary issue. With two leaks occurring in close proximity, and previous leaks occurring over the last 10 years, there was a substantial risk of more. The @one Alliance was engaged with immediate priority being to design, install and commission an temporary above-ground bypass to mitigate the impact of any further potential leaks while the permanent solution was identified. New case study: Sluvad WTW: Removing manganese and iron through the first UK water industry application of jet mixing for coagulant mixing at a water treatment works. Sluvad WTW produces an average of 120 Ml/day of clean water to supply the South Wales region and has a maximum production of 172 Ml/day. Located approximately two miles south-east of Pontypool, it overlooks Llandegfedd Reservoir from where the raw water is pumped into the treatment works. At Sluvad WTW, raw water is dosed with a ferric sulphate coagulant followed by polyelectrolyte flocculant before entering 28 inverted pyramid clarifiers where the flocculated particles are retained in a sludge blanket. The clarified water passes to 28 rapid gravity filters before chlorination and flowing to the three contact tanks on site and entering distribution. There is seasonal variation in the incoming flow to Sluvad WTW owing to changes in the Llandegfedd Reservoir during the late summer period, such as thermal stratification, that results in spikes of manganese. The increased load of manganese coincides with increased iron levels in the final water as the ferric sulphate coagulant dose is increased to maintain water quality. New case study: Kerse Treated Water Storage Tank: A new £6.5m water storage tank completed on schedule replacing 90 year-old asset. Kerse lies in open countryside approximately 3.5km from the former mining village of Patna in East Ayrshire, some 15km from the county town of Ayr. The newly constructed 3 megalitre capacity, twin cell, treated water storage tank serves a local population of 6,500 private customers and businesses. It is situated immediately adjacent to the existing facility and is fed from the nearby Afton Water Treatment Works. Scottish Water’s Non-Infrastructure Alliance Partner, ESD JV (a joint venture comprising MWH Treatment, Binnies and Galliford Try) commenced construction in July 2022. Water into supply was achieved on schedule on 21 May 2024. The dimensions of the new asset are 29m x 21.5m x 7m to be covered by a reinforced concrete roof with waterproof membrane. In order to protect the viability of the existing tank, and as a consequence of above average rainfall in the winters and springs of 2022, 2023 and 2024, a complex bulk excavation operation was undertaken which included the extensive use of soil anchors to stabilise the ground. This solution included some in-depth collaboration from the site team and specialist sub-contractor to design a solution to ensure no current live network pipes (which were only 6m from the top of the batter of the excavation) were damaged during the installation of the anchors. New case study: Cotton Valley WRC: £17m investment project spanning multiple phases to address operational challenges & enhance treatment capacity to maintain regulatory compliance. Anglian Water’s Cotton Valley Water Recycling Centre serves a substantial population equivalent from Milton Keynes and the surrounding area, treating wastewater to stringent regulatory standards before discharge. Over time, the facility has encountered various operational challenges that hindered its efficiency and compliance. These operational challenges included limitations in post-digestion dewatering capacity, recurring pollution incidents during high storm surges, the imposition of a stringent phosphorus standard, and inadequate stormwater storage capacity. Addressing these challenges became imperative to ensure the facility’s long-term sustainability and resilience. The Anglian Water @one Alliance was tasked with identifying the issues affecting the Cotton Valley WRC and finding and undertaking solution to address each issue. The identified issues were (i) post-digestion dewatering capacity, (ii) pollution incidents and stormwater management, (iii) phosphorus standard compliance, and (iv) treatment plant station resilience.
