We're thrilled to announce the release of our latest research report, "Enhancing the Brexit Deal: Exploring the Impact of a UK-EU Veterinary Agreement on Agri-food Trade," authored by Jun Du, Oleksandr Shepotylo, and Gregory Messenger. This comprehensive study, conducted by Aston University’s Centre of Business Prosperity and the University of Bristol, delves into the crucial role of the agri-food sector in the UK economy and its relationship with the EU post-Brexit. The report reveals key insights: 👉 The UK agri-food sector contributes significantly to the national economy, representing 6.2% of GVA, exporting £25 billion, and employing 4.2 million individuals. 👉 Post-Brexit, the sector has experienced a decline in exports to the EU by 5%, despite overall growth. 👉 Trade agreements with deeper commitments on sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures show a positive impact on exports, particularly in animal products and food. Through rigorous analysis of trade agreements and export data, our researchers have identified the need for policy intervention to address the challenges faced by the agri-food sector. Specifically, the report suggests: 👉 The implementation of a legally enforceable veterinary agreement to alleviate trade barriers and enhance UK-EU trade. 👉 Deepening the Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) through supplementary agreements to include Agriculture Extra provisions. 👉 The deeper and more enforceable the agreement, the greater the potential impact on trade, with the report indicating a potential increase in UK agriculture and food exports by up to 22.5%.
