Kelis, 19: Kelis has suffered with irregular and heavy periods since she was 11. At school she had to walk around with several pads and tampons, and now as an adult, she has to wear 4 pads at a time for fear of leaking. Her heavy bleeding has been hard to deal with, as she 'floods' often if she coughs or sneezes. Combined with irregularity, this means she must always plan ahead, and it has taken a toll on her mental health. She has one large cyst on her ovary, and up to 20 smaller cysts on the other. She hopes to raise awareness as she knows that PCOS is a very under-researched and under-represented condition. Build a self check of your vulva into your monthly routine. Great tips from Dr. Aziza Sesay and an important new tool from The Eve Appeal to help you check for vulval cancer symptoms for #GynaecologicalCancerAwarenessMonth👇

Do you check your vulva? Yes, just as with other self checks such as breast/chest/pecks, vulva checks are also important. This is so you know your normal and so you can pick up any changes early, even if it’s the slightest change. Get them checked out as soon as possible and if they do turn out to be cancer (which is rarely the case) - yes, vulval cancer can and does occur - it is picked up early where treatment is more likely to be successful, less invasive and curative. Our bodies are hypersexualised, riddled with shame and stigma and as such, many are too embarrass to even check. The censorship on many platforms certainly doesn’t help. A new survey YouGov from The Eve Appeal for #GynaecologicalCancerAwarenessMonth shows that that only Only 4% of women regularly check for vulval changes. 79% of women had never checked their vulva for changes or signs of cancer, and amongst those who have heard of vulval cancer before, almost half (48%) have never checked. This needs to change! Please help us by sharing this video guide on how to do the checks, it could save someone’s life!! The Eve Appeal have launched ‘Self-Check First’, a monthly text reminder to check the vulva for any changes, along with a ‘how-to’ guide to support self-checking ofgynaecological symptoms.
