Firefighter John Dean talks us through the dangers of cold water shock in the third of our water safety videos filmed with WMFS' Technical Rescue Team. Cold water shock is a real danger in water below 15°C, resulting in involuntary bodily reflexes when suddenly submerged in cold water. This shock can be the precursor to drowning. The easiest way to avoid this is to not get in. Don't take the risk. If you do run into difficulty, remember #FloatToLive: Lie on your back and float, tilting your head back so your ears are touching the water Resist the instinct to panic or swim Lie back and keep your airways clear, push your stomach up and extend your limbs, moving hands and feet to help you float Try to take control of the effects of cold water shock, such as the gasping reflex Once your breathing is controlled call for help and, if possible, try making your way to safety More advice can be found here: https://lnkd.in/esA8F3MZ

Firefighter John Dean talks us through some drowning-related statistics in the second of our water safety videos filmed with WMFS' Technical Rescue Team. Last year, 236 people accidentally drowned in the UK. 83% of these deaths involved men, with drugs and alcohol often being a factor. We desperately want to bring these numbers down. West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) condemns the violence and public disorder we have sadly recently seen across the country. Oliver Lee OBE, Chief Executive Officer of WMFS said: "There is absolutely no justification for this mindless violence which presents a sizeable risk, not only to those in the towns and cities where it is taking place, but also to emergency service workers. As I was listening to the news yesterday morning, I heard an interview with a community worker from Rotherham who observed that hatred will never win, but that communities coming together will. Having worked in communities all my life, I could not agree more. WMFS is well prepared. Working extremely closely with our excellent blue light colleagues and partners, we are doing all we can to keep our wonderfully diverse communities as safe as possible. This will never change, no matter the circumstances. During this dreadful period whereby certain members of our communities (to include in this service) feel particularly vulnerable, I would like to reaffirm our cast-iron commitment to being a public service that embraces cultural diversity, rejects racism and hate, and imbues a culture of compassion, kindness and respect.
