About us
As one of Cambridge's newest Colleges, Wolfson is proud to be a modern institution with a pioneering record. We were the first Cambridge College to admit men and women as students and Fellows on an equal basis. Wolfson is cosmopolitan, with 99 nationalities represented among our current students. We are also egalitarian, with no High Table or Senior Combination Room, and all facilities shared between Fellows, staff and students alike. The College is located on Barton Road, just west of Newnham and Selwyn Colleges, and occupies a single, nine-acre site where we accommodate up to 450 students. Our accommodation is presently undergoing a major refurbishment with the help of a substantial grant from the Wolfson Foundation. The College provides tutorial and pastoral support and a wide range of facilities for its 499 full-time and 204 part-time postgraduate students, and 184 mature undergraduate students. There are also seminars put on by the Humanities Society and the Science Society, art exhibitions, concerts and recitals, and a wide range of sporting and recreational activities from rowing, table tennis and basketball to salsa and tango classes, aerobics and Japanese martial arts. We’re thrilled to announce that Wolfson PhD student, Sheryl Wombell, has been confirmed as one of two Freer Prize Fellows at the Royal Institution for the 2024/2025 academic year 🧪 Sheryl said, "I am absolutely thrilled to be a recipient of a 2024 Ri Freer Prize Fellowship. Not only does the Fellowship mean I will have the necessary funding to complete my PhD project, it also represents a unique and exciting opportunity to reach new audiences with my research." Sheryl’s research explores the movement of information about health and healing amongst exiled and travelling elites in the mid-seventeenth century, examining the agency and creativity of individuals in dealing with illness, negotiating medical relationships, and coping with the mass of information those encounters generated. Think business! Think climate!! Think social impact!!! I am thrilled to share that I have been awarded the inaugural University of Cambridge Mastercard Foundation Entrepreneurship Prize, organized in collaboration with King’s Entrepreneurship Lab. This prestigious competition happened two weeks ago at the University of Cambridge Judge Business School, where five shortlisted finalists presented innovative ideas before a distinguished panel of judges, including industry experts and academics, led by Professor Bhaskar Vira , Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge and Director of King's Entrepreneurship Lab, Kamiar Mohaddes. It was truly inspiring to witness my fellow finalists showcase brilliant business ideas from across five African countries: Tanzania, Egypt, Uganda, Nigeria, and Ghana. Reflecting on our pitches, it is evident that Africa is brimming with potential and innovation. I am deeply honored to have been awarded the top prize in this competition. Congratulations to all my colleagues who presented themselves for this and especially for making it to the final stage. These great ideas would not die off. I am confident that this experience would open us to more platforms to further discuss these and eventually make the change we so much desire to make. I am profoundly grateful to the Mastercard Foundation team at the University of Cambridge and the judges for believing in my ideas of making a change starting from my circle.This recognition will significantly support me in scaling the impact I aspire to make in the world.
