About us
Established in 1978, the World Transplant Games Federation is a worldwide organisation with representation from more than 60 countries that celebrates successful transplantation and the gift of life through unique and inspiring events – namely the Summer and Winter World Transplant Games. Our principle aim is to raise public awareness of the importance and benefits of organ donation by demonstrating the health and fitness that can be achieved post-transplant. Equally, we aim to encourage all recipients to remain fit and healthy post transplant. We understand that receiving a transplant is a major transition in the journey of life and we have introduced various education programmes to help all recipients live life to the fullest. We aim to educate the public on the principles of organ donation and to highlight the worldwide shortage of donor organs. We are recognised by the International Olympic Committee and actively promote the benefits of sport at all levels and fair play for transplant recipients. Our athletes are our ambassadors for the value of organ donation and give hope to people on transplant waiting lists. The World Transplant Games give recipients the motivation to strive towards full rehabilitation through exercise, camaraderie and healthy living. They also provide them with a way of saying ‘thank you’ to those who made it all possible – the donors, their families, health professionals, researchers and carers… Without them, there would be nobody on the starting line.

Hola! Exciting developments for the expansion of the WTGF's Refit for Life! program. Thanks to our partnership with ITB-MED, our teams are working to ensure Refit reaches more #transplant recipients and healthcare professionals across the globe. Translations into four new languages are in the pipeline with our Spanish program launching soon. We believe having this content in multiple languages will be a game-changer, making the program more accessible and impactful. Over the coming months, we'll be working closely with our member organizations to introduce Refit for Life! to transplant centres worldwide, helping more recipients navigate their post-transplant journey with confidence and support. Refit for Life! is designed to help transplant recipients by guiding them back to an active lifestyle, which is beneficial for recovery, organ longevity and long-term health. The program is structured around three key pillars: Move Right, Think Right, and Eat Right! Move Right: Encourages regular physical activity at a level suitable for you, rebuilding strength, improving cardiovascular health, and overall quality of life. Think Right: Focuses on mental wellness, offering strategies and resources to support a positive mindset, reduce stress, and cope with the emotional challenges that accompany the transplant journey. Tatiana Benitez, a Paraguayan heart transplant athlete suffered a cardiac arrest on April 27 and after emergency surgery was in a coma for 4 days. This past weekend she climbed her first mountain (her first physical mountain) for 5 1/2 hours for about 9 km with an elevation gain of 400 m uphill and 400 m downhill. The doctors in April were convinced that she would not survive. With determination and support, the impossible becomes possible. #transplant #organdonation

My scar means I get a second chance of life, and a return to university, to help others, to represent my country. Something I never dreamed I'd have the opportunity to experience. We're getting ready for this historic event! The first-ever Transplant Football World Cup announces teams from 11 nations. From September 8 to 14, Cervia, the heart of Italy’s Riviera Romagnola, will come alive with over 300 participants, including 180 transplant footballers. More than just a competition to crown an International Champion, this event will celebrate the gift of life through the beautiful game. The Transplant Football World Cup is organized by AiCS - Associazione Italiana Cultura Sport in collaboration with Aned Sport. #transplantfootball #football

The Periscope Crew's film, 'Everywhere', takes you on a journey to the World Transplant Games held in Perth last April. Through their lens, they share the profound impact that meeting transplant athletes and donor families from all over the world, had on themselves. The film beautifully captures the spirit within our global community - the spirit of hope, gratitude, connection, and courage! 'Everywhere' was selected for the Venice Shorts Film Awards just one week after production finished. "Infinite perspectives, limitless resilience, and a celebration of the human spirit." ’Everywhere’ tells the story of what happens when you give young people the chance to show what we are capable of. Our Crew was invited to join the media teams for the World Transplant Games in Perth, April 2023. This documentary captures the Crew's incredible growth during that week, made even more remarkable because The Periscope Crew are a film crew living with disabilities. Initially hired to film extra sports footage for major media companies and capture the Games’ spirit, The Periscope Crew attended 17 sport events at venues across Perth. We built genuine connections with transplant athletes and donor families from 45 different countries. By doing things our own way, we earned trust and captured transplant stories that no one else had heard, revealing the 'gift of life' that is the World Transplant Games. ‘Everywhere’ is a compelling tale and a world-first, bringing together key interviews and our Crew’s own footage from the Games. This story is not just about The Periscope Crew but also produced by the Crew, with mentor support from the team at Sum Effect | Commercial Photo, Video & Film.
