Lovely to host a table of fellow members of the Worshipful Company of Insurers at last night's Carlton Club annual liveries dinner. Melanie Hampton was our speaker - a WCI member (insurance broker) and Master of the Worshipful Company of Paviors (only the 2nd lady master in 748 years). She spoke about antiquity and modernity and how the movement has adapted to the modern world but held true on its core values of trade, apprenticeship, opportunity and philanthropy. That soft power should not be underestimated and we give a whopping £73m a year to charitable causes. A very lively Q&A session was then had with the prevailing theme that the livery movement is there for everyone - young and old alike and how we must reach out beyond the confines of the city to ensure we help as many as we can. Many thanks to my guests Dr Helen Phillips, Alan Punter, ROGER FLAXMAN, Michael Wilson, Nick Smith, David Sales, Paolo Cuomo, Terry Alexander and Joshua Gosling.
