About us

YSS enables people who face significant life challenges to feel safe, have the opportunity to thrive and to realise their potential, and we have been doing so for more than thirty years. There are thousands of people in our communities who struggle with life and face what seem to be insurmountable barriers - they are why we exist. We provide a wide variety of mainly community focused support for people and are often described as the ‘glue’ between those at risk of social isolation and the wider mainstream society. We run a diverse range of services working with all ages but our aim is always the same – to help people to break through barriers (real or perceived) and to achieve their potential. Our work is rooted in the local communities we serve. We have a strong local presence and a national profile for our innovative work. We strive to ‘punch above our weight’ to ensure our voice, and the voice of our service users, is heard and to influence and inform service design and policy. Our Vision YSS seeks a society where all people feel safe, have the opportunity to thrive and to realise their potential. Our Mission YSS enables people who face significant life challenges to feel safe, have the opportunity to thrive and to realise their potential. YSS Beliefs (which underpin the services we provide) People can break through barriers to thrive and realise their potential. The best outcomes result from holistic, person centred services combined with a solution focused approach. One size does not fit all. To be effective we have to continually develop and work in partnership to improve services and increase the reach and outcomes for those with whom we work to deliver effective and joined up services. Organisations should be embedded in the local communities they serve and have an intimate knowledge and understanding of a community's assets and needs.

Thank you to Dr Stephanie Jane Bennett for continuing to shine a light on the importance of identifying children affected by parental imprisonment and ensuring they receive adequate support that meets their needs. Dr Stephanie Jane Bennett's research alongside Professor Victoria Cooper and Professor Jane Payler highlighted the amazing work YSS does everyday supporting families affected by familial imprisonment across Worcestershire. I am currently in Singapore at the International Corrections and Prisons Association 2024 conference, and I spoke on Monday about the Identification and Support for Children with a parent in prison, current practice and ongoing challenges. https://lnkd.in/eFkacBSJ. This is based on research conducted by Professor Victoria Cooper, Professor Jane Payler and myself, on the Families First Intervention designed and delivered by YSS Evangelia Palios-Hayden. Based on current estimates, it is probable that there are in excess of 15 million children worldwide that are impacted by parental imprisonment. I shared the findings of our report and shared our call for action: What is now urgently needed: •Radical change in terms of recording and storing information about how many children are impacted by parental imprisonment in real-time. •Reform regarding how this information is shared with partner agencies so that families can receive the support they desperately need. •Careful consideration & expansion of the type & quality of needs-based, responsive support that families of prisoners require. 🏃♂️ Inspiring Journey: Supporting Visually Impaired Veterans 🏃♂️ Last week, our Remember Veterans lead, Lisa Burnett had the incredible opportunity to visit Hereford’s Royal National College for the Blind to welcome Darren Blank, a visually impaired veteran who is on an extraordinary mission—running from Land’s End to John O’Groats to raise funds for the ‘Visually Impaired Veterans Ski Club’ (VIVSC). 🌍💪 The VIV Ski Club, founded over 45 years ago, provides visually impaired veterans with the chance to enjoy a week of skiing or snowboarding each year. For members, skiing is not just a sport; it’s a crucial part of their rehabilitation and ongoing well-being. “The club helps members gain confidence and freedom on the snow with support from a dedicated team of experienced volunteer guides, most of whom are veterans themselves,” said Stewart Graham from VIV Ski Club. “All our visually impaired veterans (VIs) are registered blind, with their impairments ranging from heavily blurred vision to zero sight.” Quote from Lisa Burnett🗣 "As someone who has been an Adaptive Ski Instructor for Wounded, Injured, and Sick servicemen and women, Lisa knows firsthand the transformative power of adaptive sports. Darren’s determination to support his fellow veterans through this incredible challenge is truly inspiring" A big thank you to the Herefordshire & Worcestershire Armed Forces Covenant Partnership and Kate La Barre for connecting us with Darren’s story. It’s a powerful reminder of how our community can come together to support remarkable causes. Please take a moment to read Darren’s story, share the link, and spread the word. Let’s rally behind Darren as he completes this amazing challenge! 🌟 🔗 Read Darren’s Story https://lnkd.in/g_YnRAWK YSS #YSS #RememberVeterans #SupportOurHeroes #VIVSC #AdaptiveSkiing #InspirationInAction #LandEndToJohnOGroats

We are pleased to announce that West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion has agreed to fund a pilot project between YSS and West Mercia Youth Justice Service aimed at improving road safety across West Mercia by reducing the number of driving offences committed by under 17 year olds. Building on our successful adult #MORSE service, the MORSE Youth project will provide 1:1 holistic support to children and young people who have commited driving offences, by identifying and reducing impulsive thinking via an innovative behaviour change programme. Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion said: “As we mark the start of National Road Victim’s Month, it’s vital that more is done to make West Mercia’s safer as it’s a sad fact that too many people are killed or seriously injured on our roads.  “I am proud to fund this first-of-a-kind project which is being delivered by WMYJS and YSS in West Mercia to make young people aware of the significant consequences their actions can have on our roads. “I hope to see a real change made and that young people play their part in making our roads safer.” YSS Managing Director, Debb Grantham, said: “I am thrilled to announce the launch of the innovative MORSE Youth pilot programme in partnership with Lorna Tilley, Head of West Mercia Youth Justice Service, and in collaboration with Ian Edwards, a renowned road safety consultant with over 20 years of experience. “Building on YSS’s rich history in youth prevention and intervention services and alongside our successful #MORSE adult project, this new initiative will offer holistic support to young people involved in driving offences—a first-of-its-kind service in the UK.  “Together, we’re not just addressing the present; we’re working to prevent future road victims and create safer communities for us all.” https://lnkd.in/d42MM_BM

🎣 What an Amazing Day at Broad Acres Fishery🎣 Young Carers 👊 Yesterday, Wednesday 14th August, our Young Carers enjoyed a fantastic day out at the beautiful Broad Acres Fishery in Hanbury/Bromsgrove, all thanks to the incredible support from the Masonic Fishing Charity (MTSFC)! 🌟 It was a day full of firsts and fun for our young carers—many of whom were trying their hand at fishing for the first time. From catching massive perch, carp, roach, and even some cheeky little tiddlers 😂, to making new friends and taking a well-deserved break from their caring roles, the smiles were as big as the fish they caught! 🐟😄 Whether it was their first time on an activity or they're seasoned Young Carers, everyone had a blast! They put down their phones, embraced the patience of angling, and enjoyed the outdoors. The friendly staff were amazing, providing not just food and drinks, but also creating an environment where our Young Carers could truly relax and have fun. A massive thank you to MTSFC for making this day possible every year. The joy, the laughter, and the memories made yesterday are what it's all about. Until next time! 🎉 #YoungCarers #YSS #MTSFC #FishingFun #RespiteCare #MakingMemories YSS
