Well, that was a tasty and #sustainable lunch break at ‘Society and the Sea 2024’ #SOCSEA24 at #Greenwich. This morning Dr Thomas Beard chaired an interesting selection of presenters on the ‘Green Waves’ stage. Amongst them were Stefano D.M. S. Who gave us the eye watering stat of shipping needed 4 Petrawatts of clean energy annually (same as the US’ annual energy consumption). Madadh MacLaine told us that we need to tackle more than carbon, the Surface Micro Layer is under attack from human impacts also, especially when we look at #plankton, whose number have dropped 50% since 1950. John Mullen talked about some of the energy opportunities in ports, where there is spare land. Looking forward to the afternoon. 🌍 Shipping's Tremendous Opportunity: Keeping the World Under 1.5°C 🚢 Madadh MacLaine, ZESTAs Secretary General, will address the critical issue of the shipping industry's impact on planetary health and how we can transform challenges into opportunities in her opening keynote at #SOCSEA24. Shipping’s influence is vast, affecting both energy and ocean health. According to the IPCC, oceans absorb 90% of the heat trapped by greenhouse gases. Current practices are leading to acidification at a rate faster than at any time in millions of years, threatening mass extinction and driving us toward 3°C by the century's end—a scenario that is deadly for many. Pollution from emissions, oil spills, ballast water discharge, and underwater noise are devastating marine life. This stark reality demands urgent climate action within the next six years. Herein lies the opportunity—shipping has the power to lead the charge toward positive change. The maritime shipping industry is intertwined with the global economy, from energy to industry. Shipping uses one-third of the world’s fossil fuels and transports nearly all of them. A change of fuel will create a ripple effect throughout the entire global energy system. Imagine committing to evolving shipping’s consumption to green energy and transporting only sustainable fuels, shifting the global energy landscape. Real change requires bold actions and innovations, not minor tweaks. Technologies like hydrogen fuel cells, modern wind propulsion, maritime batteries, and hydrogen bunkering systems, as well as mobile offshore hydrogen production, aren’t just side projects: they are the future of shipping. This shift rests on three pillars: policies that push zero-emission solutions, market demand supporting adoption, and niche market development that drives change at a regime level. Together, these pillars will create ecosystems where niche technologies can thrive and propel industry-wide change. This is our moment—our chance to lead a global transformation. 🔊 Game Changer! Zero Emissions Ship Technology Association (ZESTAs) members MJR Power & Automation lead the way for all electric CTVs with their 1MW offshore charging system. ⚡ “Electric charging from offshore turbines is the cheapest form of power, and a must if we are going green,” said Leo Hambro cofounder and commercial director of Tidal Transit Limited. ⚡ Ryan Reilly at MJR stated “By the end of June, we should be certifying the system offshore, depending on a weather window,”.
