About

My approach is to develop a narrative for the lighting design such that it is unique to the client; ensures that the solution focuses on the visual needs of the users and apply the latest research and technology appropriately to deliver the highest quality of lit spaces. I have worked across all sectors in the lighting industry with a focus on galleries, workplace, daylight design, leisure, aviation, public realm, and retail.

Since 2006 I have been lucky enough to create and lead an experienced and proactive group of people who each bring a unique element to the field of lighting design and technology. With lighting designers, interior designers, architects, light artists and product designers, the team has the ability to realise every element of lighting design and co-ordinate with other architecture and engineering disciplines.

I still look back at my first lighting design project, the national museum of film, photography and television as the turning point in my understanding of how light can impact on us; our perception of a space and how elements and objects can be brought to our attention or blended to become the background. A fair amount of time has passed since then (1996/7) and I have learnt a lot, but the appeal of lighting design is that there is always more to learn and so much more we can do for people and the buildings and spaces they use.

I contribute to a number of lighting design guides in the UK and provide lectures and seminars on lighting design topics.

Learning, whether by discussion, interaction, practical application or formal lecture, requires sufficient light to enable the pupils to see the visible information presented around them. Whether in a primary school classroom or a professional lecture theatre, whether for young or old, the quality of light in the learning environment will directly affect our learning experience and indeed our motivation to learn.

Lighting Guide LG5: Lighting for education offers guidance on the lighting of all educational spaces including lecture theatres, teaching rooms, conference rooms, special-purpose rooms (such as gymnasia, art rooms and dance studios), multi-purpose rooms etc. In addition to providing guidance on the lighting equipment and its positioning, LG5 considers other important factors such as the decoration and finishes of rooms, sightlines, positioning of lighting controls and access doors, all of which need to be taken into account from the earliest stages of the planning process.
