About
Hello there! 🙋🏻♀️ I am Alöna (pronounced Alyona) - an experienced project manager and a passionate researcher with newly-acquired PhD in social sciences. My expertise lies in sustainable tourism development in small rural and island destinations, with strategic planning being the foundation for such development.
Using my experience and skills, I am open to consulting DMOs, community groups and other tourism organisations on the subject of strategic planning for sustainable tourism development. In this role, I can apply my Place-based Strategy Evaluation Framework to ensure the development strategy meets the needs of the place and its people. This framework can be applied to development strategies beyond tourism (such as transport, housing and other placemaking strategies).
Academically, I am working on expanding my research and teaching in the subject of tourism and sustainable destination development. I am interested in rural and island tourism, cold-water destinations and tourism in the North. I see the world as a pragmatic interpretivist, and believe that context matters and the reality is subjective.
In addition, I offer freelance support for public and third sector organisations, including Higher Education, in a variety of areas. These include research, resources development, change management, communication and engagement, and project management.
I am also an active advocate for tourism in Scotland, passionate about our country and its people. I am interested in projects that promote sustainability and fairness, and that help to respect the past and develop a better world for future generations.

Developed a Place-based sustainable tourism strategy evaluation framework, based on the case study of Orkney Islands. This study examined the unique context of Orkney as a rural cold-water archipelago destination, driven by the sense of place of Orkney people. To understend the attributes of the sense of place, the study employed a multi-method qualitative approach.
