How can you build strong relationships with community members who cannot attend in-person events?
During lockdown we honed skills at this with things like catering and worthwhile swag going to people’s homes, so that they had elements of the irl experience brought to their home. As a community that has home worked for decades I think open source is brilliant at this kind of thing and creative. We also recognise participation and contribution through online badges etc. Recognition and small acts of kindness in thank yous go a long way.

How do you validate your start-up idea without revealing too much?
Reality is if its software-based adoption creates ubiquity and breaks into a market. However decision about open sourcing is only smart if you understand what your business model will be and that open source is not a business model. Worst case scenario you enable your competitors with your own innovation best case you create a social contract with a community who will use, contribute and potentially become your customers. However later realising that your early choice to open source is a mistake and that you need to become proprietary to make more $ breaches the social contract. You can do it once like Elastic but as an individual you will never be trusted again. Worse still is abuse of a bait and switch marketing tool as with MongoDB

How do you differentiate your open core offering from your competitors and alternatives?
Equating proprietary and closed source software is incorrect. Source can be shared bit not be open source because it is not on an open source licence. That means some shared or public source code is not open source software but proprietary software. The value of open source beyond just sharing source code is important to understand. A key understanding in open core is that even is code is shared or public source it may be proprietary and mean a company is open core. This has been the case with companies like Elastic and Mongo DB using the SSPL and other licences not approved by the Open Source Initiative. So Open Core is open source plus proprietary whether the proprietary os closed or shared / public source.

Open Source Patent Pledges 2017
International In-House Counsel Journal
My article considers the use of patent promises or pledges, as a device to counter what are often seen in the Open Source world as undesirable consequences of the operation of the patent system. They have become particularly topical in 2017, as the world’s first billion dollar Open Source company, Red Hat, extended it’s patent pledge further in September 2017

Thoughts on Open Innovation
OpenForum Academy
Open Innovation is everywhere. However, the precise scope of Open Innovation, its impact on daily life, and the policy measures needed to sustain it are still a matter of intense discussion and debate. This book goes some way to addressing these challenges. It covers openness in software, data and access in an accessible way with essays penned by leading thinkers in each field. It forms part of OpenForum Academy's policy outreach and is presented by the Fellows from our think-tank.

2004, 2006
"an engaging book...Amanda Brock's guide to the legal aspects of e-commerce is accessible to lawyers and lay people alike." "In tone and content it is refreshingly different from the rather too stolid commentary often provided in texts by legal practitioners in private practice an is equally unlike the exhaustive analytical product of many legal academics. It is a good read." Richard Susskind, The London Times 2004
