“Working at Pedal Me was one of the most rewarding and exciting jobs I have ever had, where Ben was an inspiring leader, absolutely devoted to the team and our mission. Joining Pedal Me as a rider was exciting from the get go, where the training was fun but challenging. I felt proud to pass my tests and get riding, and felt well-supported to ease into it. There was always a healthy atmosphere of being as safe and efficient as it was possible, and everybody looked out for each other. Ben’s ‘everybody rides’ means that he rides like everybody else. He was our boss, but he was one of us. The incredible atmosphere at Pedal Me instilled a love for the company among employees, where team-members would go above and beyond for the company. Sometimes people wrote Pedal-Me raps, sometimes people wrote blogs, everybody offered ideas. Ben was supportive, encouraging and inspiring as a sustainable entrepreneur, always thinking about people and the environment as a crucial part of success for the business.”

I coordinated the Learn to Row course teaching 100-120 participants the basics of rowing through co-ordinating some 40 volunteers over the summer holiday period over two years.
This was worth some £10,000/year in direct income from the course to the club after expenses, and in my final year running the course we gained an income of some £10,000/year in additional memberships from those joining via the Learn 2 Row. This was worth some £10,000/year in direct income from the course to the club after expenses, and in my final year running the course we gained an income of some £10,000/year in additional memberships from those joining via the Learn 2 Row. Athletes from these courses went on to win Womens Henley a few years later for the club, one of the most prestigious races on the domestic calendar - a proud day for me indeed.
I wrote a week-by-week program to ensure that all the basics were covered and maximise effective coaching time and co-ordinated the volunteers such that there was sufficient coaching cover at each session.
This was a massive project to manage, especially as I was a novice project manager at the start. In the second year, in order to maximise the number of participants going on to join the rowing club as full members I led on a full follow up to ensure that participants were making a positive decision whether to continue or not, rather than just dropping out. This boosted handover numbers from 23 in the first year to 51 in the second year.
Full credit to everyone who supported me so well in running this program. In particular, the club's treasurer was extremely helpful and did much of the hard work. Fortunately I was able to put her forward as 'Volunteer of the year' which she duly won for our region.
