Software accreditation, such as the Autodesk Certified Professional (ACP) path, is incredibly valuable. Whilst I wholly agree that having a body of work to show a prospective employer is important, it is also important to demonstrate that you are willing to invest in yourself and get the necessary training and accreditation in your chosen application. You may have worked on prestigious projects, but does that demonstrate you have the necessary CAD application knowledge? As an employer running a small business, I would want to see a person who has empowered themselves by getting the Autodesk ACP qualification, whilst working on projects. Investing in yourself can pay dividends if you are willing to do so.

A CAD mouse gives you the flexibility to program extra buttons to perform repetitive tasks, which could (potentially) lead to repetitive strain injuries in the long term. Yes, you could use a regular mouse, but you might have to perform two or three clicks when a programmed button only needs one click. Other functionality can be added, including forward and back buttons, when using web pages. There is also extra mouse wheel functionality. It does depend on budget, but these are the tools of your trade. Buy quality, and you will get functionality and longevity when using them.

I have used the 3Dconnexion (www.3dconnexion.com) kit for many years, including their CadMouse and SpaceMouse products. The CadMouse has an extra programmable button and is wireless, making it highly suitable for mobile and on the go. They also provide a superb SpaceMouse for Laptops that is also wireless and great for mobility. All of their products are great for ergonomics and extended use, but other superb brands exist. Logitech has some superb CAD mice, and many gaming mice out there can also be used.

Always look for ways to improve, whether by training, learning on the job, or just by empowering yourself by working through examples at home in your spare time. Remember this - you can NEVER have too much knowledge. I have been in the CAD industry for over 35 years and am still learning new things daily. Always be learning.

An employer should provide you with the tools you need to do your job effectively, proficiently, and, above all, productively. You need to find an employer who not only invests in their staff through training but also ensures that they have the latest and greatest. That way, you are not only using the latest software and hardware but also the tools that allow you to get the job done.
