How can you encourage competitive awareness and learning in your organization?
There are often teams who have rich sources of external insight - sales teams, business development and corporate strategy teams. It’s key to bring these insights into the organisation and support colleagues who are typically more internally focused to understand what competitors are doing and use external examples as inspiration for innovation. It’s all about collecting as well as connecting the dots. Creating a clear role or function that exists to bring cross-functional teams together to ideate and drive transformation can be very powerful

How do you balance the trade-off between complexity and validity in multivariate testing?
Doing good quality user research to underpin the development of your hypotheses is a best practice. Test hypotheses shouldn’t really be based on just a gut feeling of the product team. If you’re targeting an improvement in e-commerce conversion rate for example, you could run a test based on changing a feature of the website where you have seen and heard users struggling or having a negative experience during user research. It’s also worth analysing all of the data that you collect, not just looking at the headline stats. Even if the test isn’t successful based on the impact for the average user, can you find any evidence for an improvement aligned to the hypothesis you were testing for? This may underpin your next hypothesis.
