  • The Rise of the Humans: How to outsmart the Digital Deluge

    Harriman House

The rapid growth of our digital world has brought huge advantages - access to information anywhere, at any time, and the ability to communicate with colleagues, family and friends around the globe in real-time.

But in other ways, the same technology has also disconnected us. Computers risk becoming less of a productivity tool and more like information firehoses, drowning us in a deluge of data that can keep us from doing meaningful, real work. The devices in our hands connect us like…

The devices in our hands connect us like never before, but they vie for our attention to the point where they are beginning to disconnect us from the real world.

In this book, Dave Coplin, Chief Envisioning Officer at Microsoft UK, argues that right now it feels like the machines are taking over but if we stop thinking about the digital deluge as a problem and instead see it as an incredible opportunity we will be able to redress the balance. The world of work is in a state of flux and there s a lot of uncertainty at the moment. But if you believe the people that proclaim to be making the future, the way we work and the places that we do it in are due for an enormous amount of disruption. At this time of great change we need to look at the way that we work now, in the 21st century ' not in the 'Hey everybody, let's Skype in from the beach' way, but to examine the history of how we got here, the current trends and what is going to work in the future. We need to examine the way that modern technologies have affected our lives, the way that we work and examine whether or not the way that we deal with those technologies, the way that we use them, the way that we handle them on a daily basis actually fits our expectations for our day-to-day existence. In short we need to look at how we re being asked to work by the world at large and whether our existing systems might actually be stopping us, and might even be harming us in some way. We need to stop and decide what the future of work should look like; we need to reimagine business.
