Hendy required a wireless solution to replace its MPLS network. The existing network, which had bandwidth limitations and expensive recurring costs, couldn’t deliver the service that was required across the dealerships. The Hendy Group needed a future proof, streamlined solution that was capable of meeting its growing demands for fast, reliable connectivity for VOIP and Data applications.

Each dealership required at least a 50Mbs connection for its centralised applications within its private network, with a high availability exceeding 99.99%.

APC planned and designed a solution, which would deliver the required bandwidth between all of the required Hendy Group sites. APC created the solution using the Motorola portfolio of products. Advanced planning techniques and software where used to create a desktop model of the network prior to carrying out any physical site surveys.

APC installed twenty-six - (26) Motorola PTP Links creating a high bandwidth, high availability backhaul network utilising the licensed PTP800. The network would provide in excess of 600Mb between the Arqiva Structures, with the network throughput being balanced to meet the client’s specifications. The lightly licensed PTP500 and PTP600 were used in 5.4GHz and 5.8GHz for the last mile’s connectivity to the dealerships. A combination of Integrated and Connectorised antenna variants were proposed. With the integrated providing 23dBi Gain Antenna and the Connectorised allowing for High Gain Antennas to be utilised which in turn increases the system gain. Careful frequency planning was undertaken for spectrum efficiency and collocation of the lightly licensed PTP links.

The Motorola PTP network linked all dealerships back to the Head Office located in Chandlers Ford, Hampshire. The installation started in August 2011 and took five weeks for 1st phase and an additional eight weeks to complete phase 2.

With a name synonymous with quality, Harrods Aviation is a Knightsbridge based company offering top class business aviation services throughout the UK from London Luton and London Stansted airports. The business also has a Honeywell accredited engine shop at Farnborough airport.

APC Solutions was asked to review an airside installation for one of Harrods Aviation’s sites. The wireless solution currently in place used laser technology to connect the company’s private terminal to its hangar but in an area susceptible to thick fog and obstructions the service was unreliable and failed to meet the client’s expected level of service.

The recommendation from APC was to replace the existing technology with a Motorola PTP400 link, which is proven to operate in poor weather conditions and be able to withstand interference from passing planes, unlike the laser option. This was installed quickly to provide Harrods Aviation with an almost immediate solution to the problem. Connectivity has been restored between the terminal and hangar building allowing the business operations to continue without interruption.

In early September 2008, APC was asked by Thorney Motorsport’s John Thorne to provide a live on-board video stream from its racing car back to the garage and pit areas during the Britcar 24 hour race.

Although recorded video footage is now very common when viewing sporting events the challenges of providing a live feed is far more complex. Recorded footage, often taken from body cameras, on-board cameras in cars and on bikes, can be edited at a later stage, but with live streams, there is no movement for error and the feed must be a continuous quality stream. APC had to supply live footage of the driver and a driver’s-eye view of the track as a proof-of-concept for the 24 hour race period.

APC used COFDEM true non-line-of-sight solution with a single central transmit/receive station to provide 98% high-quality coverage of the circuit, with 2% less detailed footage in hard-to-reach areas of the track.

COFDM technology allowed us to connect to the vehicle, even when it passed other vehicles, went under bridges and even in areas where we didn’t have line of sight to the receiver on the vehicle. With the car racing at speeds in excess of 150mph and under great stress in breaking and accelerating zones, this was a fantastic concept to show the equipment. The overall solution is robust enough to withstand even the most demanding elements and situations.

In addition, APC streamed the footage around the circuit using the close circuit television system, enabling the general public and other teams to see the action as it happened. Finally, the footage was streamed live on the internet, which provided even greater publicity for the team. The technology can now be used for a variety of applications including rollercoasters, go-karting, mountain biking, skiing and car-driving experience days.
