What are the most important resources for finding accurate financial data for business valuation?
In general, private sources are better proxies for valuing a private business - if you use public company trading multiples you have to apply a discount to reflect lack of liquidity and transferability which can be very subjective. When selecting transactions to build a comp set of deal multiples it's important to find like-for-like deals to built a realistic picture of a business valuation. If you are valuing a business with $5m of revenue and $1m of EBITDA it may not be relevant to use the multiples paid for a business in the same industry with $5 billion of revenues. As such, when selecting multiples the size and other characteristics of the comparable transactions (for example, growth) should be considered alongside the industry.
