Conducted research on 'How Green are the Greens? A comparative analysis of the greening of UK environmental organisations and their people'.

A key finding was that organisation type and underlying ethics influenced behaviours. The greenest individuals were found to be those that grew up with a farming or rural background or had experiential learning of environment impact for example through international travel.

    Education

I was invited to join the Board of Trustees of Change Agents UK to provide overall governance and strategic direction to the charity, developing the organisations aims, objectives and goals in accordance with the governing document, legal and regulatory guidelines. But mainly because I truly support what Change Agents are about and the services they provide and wish to help them develop and grow. I was made Vice Chair of the Board in December 2022.

  • Are UK Environmental Professionals Walking the Talk? Behaviour and Values within UK Environmental Organisations and their Employees

Parallel surveys of UK environmental organisations and their employees attempted to map trends in green behaviour within these groups. Where organisations provided detail on policies and day-to-day environmental activities, their employees reported upon green behaviours enacted in their personal lives. Further analysis of underlying motivations, values and barriers to greening was made possible through detail extracted from employee interviews and open responses to survey questions.

Respondent organisations and employees were drawn from a wide range of environmental disciplines over three broad sectors: private, public and voluntary. This allowed opportunities to challenge or confirm traditional conceptions and caricatures of different ‘shades of green’ organisation and employee.

The paper summarises the key findings of this doctoral research focusing upon areas of convergence and divergence in organisation and professional behaviour and values. Organisation sector is confirmed the most significant factor influencing both employee and organisation greening. Implications of these findings are discussed.

  • 'How bad are Bananas?' The Great Carbon Footprint Game

This is the project that just keeps giving!

Having spent lots of years trying to find the best way to have deep engagement with people over their carbon footprints, up pops Anja's Carbon Footprint Game!

It first appeared in January 2015 and when we realised what a good idea it was, LSBU decided to produce a prototype for its own use. Anja went on to win an entrepreneur award from LSBU and Emma has since (2020/21) won the Women in Innovation Award for developing the game into a…

Having spent lots of years trying to find the best way to have deep engagement with people over their carbon footprints, up pops Anja's Carbon Footprint Game!

It first appeared in January 2015 and when we realised what a good idea it was, LSBU decided to produce a prototype for its own use. Anja went on to win an entrepreneur award from LSBU and Emma has since (2020/21) won the Women in Innovation Award for developing the game into a digital version.

A new version of the game has been sold to or rented by countless universities, businesses and now schools (from Bristol University, Tideway) with the intention of leaving a legacy of carbon literacy wherever it goes. The carbon facts in the game are kindly loaned by Professor Mike Berners-Lee and are taken from his popular book 'How Bad are Bananas? The Carbon Footprint of Everything'. By December 2021, hundreds of beta testers have signed up to test out the playable prototype of our digital carbon footprint game.

Delivering a digital carbon footprint game based on the successful physical bananas games has very much been a team endeavour. Sandra's writing skill and support and Tobias's expertise in grant-writing helped to shape the successful grant application. More coaching from Tobias helped to prepare me for the interview stage.

Sandra's writing skill and support and Tobias's expertise in grant-writing helped to shape the successful grant application. More coaching from Tobias helped to prepare me for the interview stage.

Once we won the funds, Tobias and Daniella have been doing their very best to make a business woman out of a consultant! Both have brought business knowledge, great processes and HUGE support to get the Future We Want Team where we need to be to relaunch our new games.

And so to the core team - Anja, Iris, Sam - with part-time support from Charlotte Lawson and Asha Mistry. Together we have:

    * Built a brand new website from scratch - www.bananasgame.co.uk
    * Redevelop new physical carbon footprint games (big and small) and figure out the best way to market them
    * Submit no less than 3 further funding applications and 2 applications to get to COP26
    * Develop our first prototype digital carbon footprint game
    * Go to COP26, launch our new physical games and digital testing prototype and sign up hundreds of beta testers
    * Develop, gain accreditation for and test run, our Carbon Literacy for Educators course

Wow! What a difference a few weeks assistance can make.

Anja and I were joined by Diana from Romania (Marketing and Comms specialist) and Josef from Malta (Digital Gaming & Visual Editor guru) on this awesome EU-funded project which supports businesses focusing on climate change issues to develop themselves. The Pioneers also get to experience working on specific tasks in a different country working within the sustainability sector. And how they excelled!

The Pioneers also get to experience working on specific tasks in a different country working within the sustainability sector. And how they excelled!

The result of the project? A new website, 3 promotional videos, a marketing campaign and hopefully a prototype digital version of the carbon footprint game. Thank you so much Diana, Joey and Anja for making the experience so much fun as well as productive. Watch this space for the relaunch of FWW!
