Raising the Nation Commission on Play is a year-long inquiry backed by Anne Longfield’s Centre for Young Lives, chaired by Paul Lindsey and supported by 12 commissioners, who are experts in why play is vital for the social, physical and mental wellbeing of children, working in collaboration with young advisers.

It will lead a national conversation about how to encourage and support children to play more – examining issues like the growth of technology and its impact on play, the importance of outdoor space, and whether parents’ attitudes to play and children’s safety have changed how children play.

The commission will hold workshops, take evidence, visit innovatory projects and produce a set of recommendations, including a new national plan for play, in June 2025. Show less

A healthy city sustains healthy people. For the first time in history, more of the planets' population now live in urban areas. There are growing public health concerns including rising global rates of chronic diseases such as obesity, hypertension, depression, and anxiety.

Parks are emerging as important public health resources that can enhance people's mental, physical, and social wellbeing by connecting people to nature, offering respite, providing access to physical activity opportunities, and serving as safe vibrant spaces for fostering social connections. Diverse urban spaces including parks, gardens, urban forests, community gardens, and park-lets can all support people's health and wellbeing. So, the need to ensure that cities are vibrant, sustainable, accessible, well-planned, and designed is critical. Show less
