I coordinated the regional WASH activities for Oxfam, within Rakhine State of Myanmar. We had 3 different WASH program, responding to needs of roughly 40,000 internally displaced persons. I did activity management, technical support and guidance in the field, and coordinated the broader program management activities, such as budget management, reporting, monthly donor and end of program report, capacity building. I successfully established Oxfam’s presence in the first phase of a response in a rural area, with remote supervision and successfully delivered outputs of the program, in accordance with budget and expected outputs in the timeframe. This was particularly difficult due to restrictions by local government to allow access to population. I particularly enjoyed the diplomacy and negotiation with the relative authorities, and strategic decision making, to ensure that Oxfam were allowed continued access to the vulnerable populations. I worked with the capital Oxfam team; consortium and donor partners secured funding for continuation of all three programs, having conducted monitoring and evaluation for revised activities. The improvement of ways of working to improve the value added to DFID of working within a consortium was a particular highlight. Other highlights included, orchestrated teams that implemented hygiene promotion for young people and adults (over 10,000 trained), particularly in innovative new hygiene promotion techniques. Monitoring and evaluation, including KAP survey and analysis, formative assessments and qualitative data gathering and analysis leading to better program implementation.

We set up and implementation of emergency water supply and treatment, including trucking and temporary pumping solutions, and were among the first INGO’s to deliver help to the population. Coordination and advocacy with WASH Cluster and other WASH actors. A particular highlight was the successful coordination with national water departments and health departments, supporting the government departments with energy supply (generators) for disabled pumping stations, and a sector control strategy in coordination with DoH to combat the risk of Dengue outbreak in urban environments. We also made urban assessments and distribution of NFI and hygiene kits to affected urban population. Support to medical team with health centre waste management.
