    Children

My time at Destiny Garden School can be described as the most rewarding experience of my life. Jacob and Brenda welcomed me into their home in Mombasa with open arms and nothing was too much trouble, from there it was easy to get to the school every day and travel around at weekends.

The kids were just fantastic, they all look out for each other and the sense of community and pride in the face of such adversity is a testament to the passion and support bestowed on the school from Jacob…

The kids were just fantastic, they all look out for each other and the sense of community and pride in the face of such adversity is a testament to the passion and support bestowed on the school from Jacob, the teachers and other supporters from around the world.

I miss all their always smiling little faces, can’t wait to go back but overall I am pleased I have found such a worthy cause to support where ALL of the donations help the children directly. A little help goes a very long way.

    • Earn up to 4 hours of CPD from the IFP, CII and PFS

    Key findings from the report

    • Driven by new limits on the amounts that can be saved into pensions, the need for diversification and a desire to capture a thriving segment of a the UK economy, the EIS market is set to continue to grow to approximately £1.5bn annually

    • EIS investments give generous tax relief on 30% income tax, zero capital gains tax and no inheritance tax if the investment is held for a minimum of three years

    • A portfolio approach to EIS investing of 30 investments is seen as optimal, giving 95% confidence of picking an investment that returns over 10x capital

    • The power of the tax and loss relief can be exploited further when they are combined with a portfolio based investment approach

    • Advisers with clients who anticipate a large capital gain in the next twelve months, or who have made a large capital gain in the last three years might consider investing in an EIS opportunity to defer the tax liability

    • 91% of advisers recommend EIS investments primarily for the tax benefits, whereas investors were more focused on the level of returns available with the tax benefits being less important

    • Based on the investment register, minimum investment levels range from £400 to £100,000 with an average just over £15,000

    • Benefit from analysis of 763 investment products globally
    • Earn up to 5 hours of CPD from the IFP, CII and PFS
    • Access the most up to date information to aid whole of market understanding

    Key findings from the report

    • We have identified over 750 alternative investments which have been marketed to retail investors

    • Several factors, such as product failures, scams and restrictive actions by the FCA have changed the regulatory landscape for alternative investments during 2013

    • 100% of respondents from the Alternative Investment Summit agreed that more advisers should consider alternative investments for their clients

    • Several mainstream markets have started to recover from the financial crisis but there is likely to be a large amount of volatility when the central banks withdraw stimulus and raise interest rates

    • The FCA implemented PS 13/03, which came into force in January 2014, to restrict UCIS from ordinary retail investors, narrowing the market but ultimately protecting investors from poorly conceived products

    • There's been a decrease in SIPP transfers as the FCA has tightened its grip on the alternative investment market, but a survey of SIPP industry experts showed that 43% believed it was OK to sell the product, then introduce the SIPP as a way to invest in it

    • The number of firms distributing alternative investments has shrunk from 500 in 2012 to around 200

    • Somewhat surprisingly 85% of new investment into alternative investments is made via an investment platform

    • There are several alternative investment structures, all offering different degrees of liquidity and regulation, with directly held asset purchases being the least regulated

Recognising excellence in the EIS and Seed EIS industry, winners were chosen by an influential panel of independent judges and announced at the House of Lords as a highlight of the EISA Chairman’s Reception.

The award for Best Innovation, Newcomer or Rising Star, sponsored by Grant Thornton, was jointly won by Intelligent Partnership and Mercia Fund Management.

Recognising those in the EIS/SElS industry that have launched a genuinely new, innovative or beneficial product or service over the past 12 months - or made a significant contribution by initiating or undertaking research or thought-leadership - judges for this award looked for exemplars who have enhanced the way the industry is perceived and encouraged more advisors and investors to get involved in it.

Liz A Brion, Tax Partner at Grant Thornton UK LLP said: “The award for Best EIS/SEIS Innovation recognises those companies that are breaking new ground, making the process of investing in EIS easier and more accessible. Congratulations to the team at IP and their winning submission which demonstrated the ability to educate people on the breadth of the industry, and engage with a new audience of advisers.”
