About

In service to a living Earth, in all its possible beauty and diversity.

I love to think and feel into the deeper questions of being human at this time. What do this collective historical moment and our individual positions and stories ask of us?

The spotting and facilitating of connections (between topics, people and organisations) gives me great pleasure. I always had a knack for sensing the dynamics of situations, social constellations, wider systems and their underlying stories. Trained in economics as moral philosophy and the sociology/anthropology of law and finance, I have been educated to critically examine the invisible matrices that govern our lives.

I support foundations and individuals in finding aligned avenues to put their wealth to use in transitioning away from a destructive economic mono-culture towards a diversity of approaches that work for the thriving of all life and the many cultures that still remain on this beautiful planet.

Abstract: By adopting an action research methodology, I inquire into how far the responses of citizens to the global economic crisis of 2008 lead to the emergence of a new economic culture in Spain and Greece. Since Southern European states follow austerity directives and do not offer sufficient support for their population, communities organise to provide for each other through cooperation and solidarity. Decentralised political and economic movements are building structures to challenge and replace established centralised institutions. As people drop out of the formal economy, they find material relief, ideological support and a sense of belonging in networks of alternative economic practices.

  • Trajectories to reconcile sharing and commercialization in the maker movement

ABSTRACT: Maker technologies, including collaborative digital fabrication tools like 3-D printers, enable entrepreneurial opportunities and new business models. To date, relatively few highly successful maker startups have emerged, possibly due to the dominant mindset of the makers being one of cooperation and sharing. However, makers also strive for financial stability and many have profit motives. We use a multiple case study approach to explore makers’ experiences regarding the tension between sharing and commercialization and their ways of dealing with it. We conducted interviews with maker initiatives across Europe including Fab Labs, a maker R&D center, and other networks of makers. We unpack and contextualize the concepts of sharing and commercialization. Our cross-case analysis leads to a new framework for understanding these entrepreneurs’ position with respect to common-good versus commercial offerings. Using the framework, we describe archetypal trajectories that maker initiatives go through in the dynamic transition from makers to social enterprises and social entrepreneurs.

MAKE-IT is a Horizon2020 European research project focused on how the role of Collective Awareness Platforms (CAPS) enables the growth and governance of the Maker movement, particularly in relation to Information Technology, using and creating social innovations and achieving sustainability.

The Maker movement is connecting citizens and professionals with digital manufacturing and communication technologies like 3D printers, laser cutters and online community platforms. As a result, virtual bits can be shared globally and turned into physical objects or atoms locally.

How can Maker communities achieve sustainability and organize themselves? What do Maker participants do, and how do they behave? What value do they create, and how does this benefit society? How can we help their governance, their impact and sustainability?

MAKE-IT addresses these questions by working on case studies, technology scenarios and action research.
