You're working with a client who's never satisfied. How can you deliver results that meet their expectations?
In reality, life is too short to be carrying clients like this. A ‘difficult to please’ client will have expectations above and beyond what can reasonably be expected. We’ve been there. We’ve binned the client. It’s not worth the hassle and has a negative effect on staff wellbeing!

How can you effectively follow up on a press release?
Here’s a complete curveball… consider NOT following up with journalists. We don’t do it, yet we have a very high strike rate. Journalists are swamped with emails and social media DMs continuously. How many actually take time to recall what you sent them? I’m guessing very few. Also, you can annoy the hell out of them if you continue to pester. Best practice? Do your homework. Take a look at what that journalist covers. Do not scattergun your releases. Target them. Take time creating your distribution lists, don’t just rely on your media database, do some Google research around your client’s topic/subject matter - you may even uncover publications that are brand new, or are not listed on your media database. I find this happens way too much!

Your PR team needs to get up to speed on media training. What’s the best way to make that happen?
This is so crucial. Our media training courses will cover a multitude of areas, but implementing what we impart to the people we train can never be overemphasised. Taking ownership of an interview, using taught tactics to simplify your key messages, being able to ‘bridge’ across from interviewer question to the answer you want to give are the key take-aways to hone, fine tune and practice, practice, practice.

What is your experience with media relations, and how can you improve it?
Cultivate relationships with journalists. It is sheer folly to rely on the ‘humble’ press release to get your clients’ message out into the big wide world. Regardless of sector you work within, get to know the key journalists as well as you can. Phone them! Don’t rely on email communication or social media interaction. Too many people are afraid to pick up the phone and talk to a journalist. Don’t be that person! This will make your communication pathway far smoother in the future. it’s an excellent learning curve.
