CQN (Center of Quantum Networks) has as a goal to lay the foundations for a socially responsible quantum internet which will spur new technology industries and a competitive marketplace of quantum service providers and application developers

The goal of Thrust 1 is to architect and build a Quantum Network, and associated protocols, that provides shared entanglement and Technology Elements quantum information transfer reliably to users that both meets an appropriate application-driven networking quality metric, and is robust to noise, workload dynamics, eavesdroppers and failures. A team of computer scientists and network engineers works with optical physicists and material scientists to design architectures and protocols for a quantum internet that seamlessly interoperates with the classical (conventional) internet. These protocols will be tested at the Tucson testbed.

With the progress of a quantum internet also sustainability should be considered. The sustainability of a system is influenced by different factors: the ecological footprint and social impacts like social and environmental justice or human and labour rights [34]. But also software maintainability and portability is a factor. With this project we would like to focus on the ecological impact of the quantum internet and how it could be measured. The ecological sustainability of a system is influenced by the following factors that have to be considered when comparing systems [27, 28]:

    - Environmental impact of the production with regard to the materials needed, energy consumption, waste
    - Distribution of the system (e. g. is shipping necessary?)
    - What is the life span of the system?
    - What are the operation costs?
    - Is it possible to recycle (at least parts of) the system?
In order to evaluate the sustainability of the quantum internet it makes sense to look at the devices that are used for building a quantum internet individually (additionally to classical ones):

    - Quantum computers
    - QKD (quantum key distribution) devices
    - Quantum repeaters / routers for building communication channels
    - Application Scenarios and standardization(IETF)

The hardware necessary to build networks, sensors and computers of quantum nature is at its infancy. Potential quantum memories, repeaters, and switches are being researched all over the world, and the quantum hardware race has started.
Therefore, a need for efficient, functional, and accurate open-source quantum networking modelling tools has never been more imminent.

Projects such as Julia’s QuantumClifford.jl enable researchers across the globe to research various aspects of quantum networking while anticipating the creation of the necessary hardware to produce laboratory experiments.
They present cheap and efficient environments to start building potential switch, protocol, and network designs. In classical computing, if one wants to protect a bit against errors, it can often suffice to represent that bit by a logical bit by repeating the data bit.

Nevertheless, in a quantum setting, that type measurement is much more complex.
Quantum qubit theory along with quantum noise present one of the most challenging problems that the quantum information field must overcome to become scalable and profitable: How to account for the error correction, needed due to quantum noise, in quantum gates?
Simulators, such as Julia's Clifford gate simulator, must mimic not only the behaviour of quantum noise, but also the effects of currently proposed quantum error correction codes.

For this reason, this project proses a comprehensive library of frequently used quantum error correcting codes for Julia’s simulator of Quantum Clifford Circuits.
These would include the Steane, Shor, and Toric codes, as well as other Surface and CSS quantum error correction codes.

2022 Quantum Internet Hackathon proposal answering the following questions:
Can Quantum Internet be environmentally sustainable?
How can Quantum Internet contribute to Climate Justice?

Through our report we looked at:
    - Environmental impact of the production with regard to the materials needed, energy consumption, waste
    - Distribution of the system (e. g. is shipping necessary?)
    - What is the life span of the system?
    - What are the operation costs?
