The Asia Crisis & Security Group developed from the Great Tsunami that struck parts of Asia on 26th December 2004. Corporate security professionals in the region worked through the Tsunami in an effort to provide assistance to employees in the region. Many of us arranged evacuations for employees who were in need of assistance in Indonesia, Thailand, and Sri Lanka. What struck those who worked through the Tsunami aftermath was the extent to which we cooperated together as security professionals working in a diverse variety of companies and the need to formalise this collaboration.
In January 2005, around twenty of us who had worked through the Tsunami response met in Hong Kong to discuss lessons learnt from the crisis, as well as ensure that we could cooperate more efficiently during future crises. The Asia Crisis & Security Group was thus formed, with a Steering Committee known as the "Eight Immortals".
