What are the most effective ways to label financial charts and graphs?
Remember that you know the data. You know what the marks mean, what dimensions and measures are being used. You know what the significance of that outlier is. But someone else will not. Make the labels as clear as you can so that someone else will see as much as you do. Add labels and then ask someone to tell you what they can see. Then start to remove labels until you have just enough, but not too much

What are the most effective ways to label financial charts and graphs?
The audience can dictate the best choice of chart. If your audience has a lot of domain knowledge about the data then a more advanced chart time might be more insightful. Whereas if you are trying to reach an audience with no knowledge a simple chart can sometimes make the visualisation "disappear" and they then just "see" the data.
