As a team of 3 undergraduates (Imperial College London; Stanford University; UC Berkeley) we designed a small device that transferred the electricity into agricultural productivity, such as harvesting or processing, to privatise the production of energy in a model that generates electricity for a household. We aimed at supplementing agricultural technology with renewable energy to use local-scaled energy as a means to spur economic development.

Projects

  • Hydraulic Model Calibration using Sequential Convex Programming

    -

We calibrate hydraulic models using an advanced heuristic approach called Sequential Convex Programming (SCP). Given the non-convex nature of the problem, SCP formulates a series of convex approximations of the original non-convex problem. While there is no theoretical guarantee that SCP will converge to a globally optimal solution, our findings demonstrate that it is both fast and effective in practice.

  • Nonlinear Structural Analysis of Discrete Structural Systems

    -

Conducted stability and buckling analysis for discrete structural systems, using nonlinear solution procedures to trace equilibrium paths. Applied geometrically and materially nonlinear finite elements for structural systems and performed nonlinear dynamic analysis of these systems. Use of nonlinear structural analysis program ADAPTIC (Izzuddin, 1991) for these analyses.

  • Structural Stability and Failure of Thin-walled Box Beams

    -

Conducted a comparative study on the failure response of a physical and computer-generated simply supported thin-walled box beam, converted into a finite element discrete system for analysis. The structural failure analysis considered both material strength and geometric instability, employing Linear Bifurcation Analysis (LBA) and Geometric and Material Nonlinear Imperfection Analysis (GMNIA). Ensured accurate results by refining the mesh to convergence and meticulously modelling the loading…

  • Design of a Large-Span Timber Structure

    -

Conducted a parametric analysis of the longest practical span for a triangular frame carrier system with a mid-span hinge.

Timber beams and columns design involved investigating mechanical properties, verifying limit states (serviceability and ultimate), and assessing shear, combined bending and axial loading (compression and tension at an angle to the grain direction), Euler theory, creep, vibrations, and deflections.

Timber beams and columns design involved investigating mechanical properties, verifying limit states (serviceability and ultimate), and assessing shear, combined bending and axial loading (compression and tension at an angle to the grain direction), Euler theory, creep, vibrations, and deflections.

Designed beam-to-column connections by examining embedment behavior and rules for dowel-type connectors in wood, calculating yield mechanisms and capacities, evaluating the strength of dowel-type fasteners, and determining the optimal spacing, distances, and effective number of fasteners for multi-fastener joints.

  • Geotechnical Analysis - Equilibrium Conventional Method of Slices

Forensic (back) analysis to determine the strength of the soil along the slip surface of a motorway to determine the residual shear strength, 𝜙′, acting on the slip surface. Forensic (back) analysis to determine the strength of the soil along the slip surface of a motorway to determine the residual shear strength, 𝜙′, acting on the slip surface. To perform the calculation, we apply the Limit Equilibrium conventional method of slices to a non-circular slip surface, assuming that drained conditions operate on the slip surface (i.e. Mohr-Coulomb failure condition).

By assuming that the motorway embankment can be modelled as a vertical line load acting perpendicular to the cross section of the slide, I investigate how the factor of safety changes with the position of the embankment for the following two conditions:
    - The embankment is constructed quickly such that excess pore water pressures are generated on the slip surface. I assume that the increase in normal total stress and pore water pressure on the slip surface, due to the embankment load, are such that there is no change in normal effective stress.
    - The embankment is constructed slowly, such that no excess pore water pressures are generated on the slip surface.

  • London's Custom House Railway Station - Business and Project Management

    -

Procuring an efficient management plan for the development of London's Custom House railway station. Estimated to cost £35 million, this project aimed to increase London’s rail-based transport network capacity by 10%, and integrate enclaved boroughs into the surrounding areas of London.

    We tackled four key points:
    - develop a baseline plan and define the main management axes of the project.
    - achieve specific goals within given constraints and a specific timeline.

    We tackled four key points:

    - acquire necessary goods and supplies on time and choose the most appropriate procurement procedure.
    - consider health, safety and welfare aspects.
