You're facing unexpected challenges in robotic system testing. How can you efficiently manage your time?
Sometimes, the big change is the one you need! I see all too often, your system integrator has just installed a new shiny piece of kit and it isn’t quite performing as well as expected. (How it was delivered to site without a rigorous FAT is another story). The system builder can see the obvious issue and knows exactly which piece of equipment isn’t performing. Instead of redesigning and replacing offending items, all too often smaller changers are made to other aspects to try and compensate, before eventually biting the bullet. This costs time, money, and customer trust. If your facing integration issues, make the hard choice, and bite the bullet early.

Struggling to meet last-minute client requests in the robotics industry?
If I had a pound for every time the client moved the goalposts; this one happens a lot! Last minute changes to scope may seem insignificant for a customer, but will likely have huge implications on redesign, lead time and integration costs. Its in our nature to always say yes to the customer ultimately taking the burden onto your own margins and employee workload, however this is a fool’s game. If you have a clearly defined URS, contract, project scope and the customer is asking you to deviate from it, they must be made aware how it will affect your business and should be back charged for changing their minds. It’s amazing how many of these last minute design changed go away as soon as they have cost and delivery delay attributed

You're designing a robotic system. How do you balance innovation with reliability?
One lesson I have learned the hard way its “KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID”. In my time as a mechanical designer of robotics I learned very quickly to prioritise reliability and functionality above all else. You may be able to figure some clever way of designing something with one less screw, or 10% material, but all off that will fall by the wayside when your customer is having to reboot the system every 10mins. I have always stuck by the principal of FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis), you must try to imagine every possible way this system could fail and design to protect against all of them. And be sure to look out for those you didn’t predict in your initial FAT, be swift to rectify all potential stoppages prior to a site delivery.

Your team is hesitant about collaborating with robots. How can you address their concerns effectively?
In my experience, the word robotics often conjures a certain amount of hesitation in most factory environments, especially those new to robotics. Its hard to pinpoint exactly why this is, however, I suspect historical political agendas pitting robotics against peoples livelihoods are to blame (but let’s not go there). Remind your team that robots are just a tool, like any other machine. No different from giving a farmer a tractor, or a doctor a Stethoscope. It’s a tool to help them and the business output more product, at a better quality, faster.
