Involved in aircraft engineering for over 30 years, during which time I have gained a degree in aeronautical engineering and a CAA part 66 aircraft maintenance licence in categories B1 and C. Since 2015 I have been involved in technical training, delivering classroom based Part 147 and non-regulatory courses. I have experience at building training departments from the ground up including the development of process and procedures. I have also designed and published a range of mandatory and awareness E-learning courses to comply with EASA, UK CAA, GCAA and FAA legislation.

DHC Dash-8 100/200 & 300 with Boroscope.
BAe 146/RJ with Engine Running & Boroscope.
EMB 170/190 with Engine Running & Boroscope.

How do you become an airframe and powerplant mechanic?
All you really need to be a good B1 or B2 engineer is a reasonably good combination of hand skills and theoretical knowledge. Most importantly you must be able to understand the concept that this is a safety critical industry, understand and follow safety principles over everything.

How do you become an airframe and powerplant mechanic?
I the UK there is a significant shortfall in licenced Engineers, B1.1 and B2 are in great demand. With no real upturn in the number of school leavers going into the industry, it seems that more are leaving than coming in. This is a major concern but there is little being done about it. Therefore in the UK an experienced B1.1 and/or B2 can expect salaries approaching or exceeding the £100k mark. With an average new start with no certification rights but with a licence around £35k. There are options to do degrees, management training, etc., all of which would help if you want to chose a path to exit the shop floor.

How do you become an airframe and powerplant mechanic?
In the UK and Europe you will need to complete the Part 66 modules for the licence type and then a period of experience before completing a type course and gaining certification rights. You can have a licence at 18 but cannot certify until you're 21. An approved B1.1 course is a minimum of 2400 hours then 2 years experience. Type course vary but a lot are around the 5-6 weeks mark. So from starting training to certifying is a minimum of 5 years and normally around 7-9 (in the UK).

How do you become an airframe and powerplant mechanic?
In the UK and Europe you can join a MRO with no formal qualifications as a basic fitter. There are competency requirements in the legislation but it's down to each organisation to assess and set the requirements for education. To start the journey to becoming licensed you need to complete all the Part 147 modules. In the UK Exeter college is one of a few that offers a BTEC level 3 in aircraft maintenance engineering. This is a particularly good place to start as it's government funded and will teach the basics of aircraft maintenance, theory of flight, etc. After this there are opportunities to go on to do apprenticeships and foundation degrees to complete your 147 training.
